China will construct and launch two remote sensing satellites for foreign countries in the coming two years, an industry insider said.

China Great Wall Industry Corp, the nation's only authorized firm for international space collaboration, will launch Venezuela's second remote sensing satellite next year and Pakistan's first remote sensing satellite in 2018, said Fu Zhiheng, vice-president of Great Wall Industry.

"Preparation work for the Venezuelan Remote Sensing Satellite 2 project is proceeding according to schedule. The contract for the Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite 1 project was signed earlier this year and will be fulfilled in 2018. The two satellites are being developed by the China Academy of Space Technology," Fu said on the sidelines of an international forum in Beijing on Friday.

A total of 180 space officials, diplomats and researchers took part in the Symposium on Space International Cooperation Promoting Economic and Social Development of Developing Country, which was organized by the China International Exchange Center for Astronautical Science and Technology and the International Academy of Astronautics.

Remote sensing satellites are tasked with forecasting weather, observing Earth, surveying land resources or monitoring oceans.

Fu said some other countries that already use Chinese satellites are also in talks with his company on the procurement of new satellites.

"In addition to traditional clients, we pay great attention to finding new customers. For instance, we are striving to tap the space market in the Middle East that is dominated by the United States and European firms," he said. "What I can tell you now is that we have made substantial progress in this region."

China has exported 11 satellites to nine countries, including Bolivia, Nigeria and Laos, statistics from Great Wall Industry show.

Fu said that Chinese satellites have become popular among developing countries for two reasons: First, they are as reliable as Western models; and second, Great Wall Industry is able to provide solution packages to developing countries covering design, launch, operation and training.

The Venezuelan Remote Sensing Satellite 2 is the third Chinese satellite designed for the South American country, following the Venesat-1 communications satellite that was launched in 2008 and the Venezuelan Remote Sensing Satellite 1, launched in 2012.

The Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite 1 is the second Chinese satellite to be used by Pakistan. Before that, China developed the PakSat-1R communications satellite that was launched in 2011.

Hu Zhongmin, director of the international cooperation department at China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, parent company of Great Wall Industry and China Academy of Space Technology, said the space giant is willing to strengthen exchanges and collaboration with developing countries so space data and technologies can benefit such countries.

"Under bilateral cooperation frameworks, we are also happy to help them to build their own space capability," he said.

Hiroki Matsuo, vice-president of the International Academy of Astronautics, said China could share its knowledge and expertise in manned and robotic spaceflight, space-based navigation and data applications with other countries.

Two things to note:-

1) The critics will look for something else to criticize.
A few years ago, the critics were criticizing China's HSR but are nowhere to be seen now.

2) When it comes to China, in a period a few years many things have improved out of sight.

Good point.

Like @ahojunk says, negativity begets negativity. Certain groups/regimes tend to look at China's efforts from a very negative and hostile perspective. I guess most of us do not feel friendship in their "loaded" criticisms. Like they did with HSR development. What did they bring about?

1. Quality issues.
2. Land purchases.
3. Mass mass protests.
4. Aviation would eat up land transport.
5. Sustainability.

When the prophecies are proven wrong, they pretend they never argued about it and move on the next target. Thick skin.

There is a military industrial complex. And there is a media industrial complex. We need to be extremely historically conscious.

China is abit late in this game. They shall have started 5years ago. But it's better than nothing. Just like the Heavy load rocket.

China launched a weather satellite at 12:11 a.m. Sunday, marking an upgrade of China's meteorological satellites in geostationary orbit.

The Fengyun-4 satellite, the first of China's second-generation weather satellites in geostationary orbit to have been launched, is also the country's first quantitative remote-sensing satellite in high orbit.

The satellite, launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province, was taken into orbit by a Long March-3B carrier rocket. The launch marked the 242nd mission of China's Long March series of rockets.

The satellite will make high time, spatial and spectral resolution observations of the atmosphere, clouds and space environment of China and surrounding regions, significantly improving capabilities of weather and climate forecasts, according to the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense.

The China Meteorological Administration is the primary user of the satellite.

Previously, China had successfully launched 14 weather satellites, seven of which are still in orbit.

AT 00:11 BJT on December 11,China successfully launched Fengyun-4-01 (FY-4-01), the first of Chinese second-generation geostationary meteorological satellite at Xichang Satellite Launch Center, southwest China's Sichuan Province. FY-4-01 is the first of Fengyun 4 geostationary meteorological satellite family of CMA,which is an important milestone for the development of weather satellites in China.


Fengyun-4-01 is expected to support various weather-related services, including weather forecasting, disaster prevention and reduction, and monitoring and warning of space weather. The capability of addressing climate change, exploring climate resources and monitoring ecological environment will also be enhanced. The first satellite of FY-4 series will explore its use in meteorology, water conservancy, agriculture, environment, energy, aviation and ocean. In addition, it will strongly support the national initiatives such as The Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiatives, also known as "One belt, One road".

The number of channels of the scanning radiation imager onboard the FY-4-01 hits 14 and has increased by 3.8 times as compared with that of current operational satellite,the FY-2 satellites. The temporal resolution has increased by twice and can scan the Eastern Hemisphere every fifteen minutes and produce an image of regional observation every minute at its full speed. The highest spatial resolution has increased by seven times, pointing to 500 meters. As a result, through FY-4-01 we can access multispectral, high-precision and quantitative observation data and images. Furthermore, users are expected to investigate the details inside typhoon, rainstorm, flood, forest fire, sand storm and space weather, effectively reducing loss of life and property from disasters.

FY-4-01 is the first quantitative remote sensing satellite of a three-axis stabilization structure on geostationary orbit for China. Four new instruments are onboard with the latest independently developed weather satellite, namely, Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI), Geosynchronous Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS), Lightning Mapping Imager (LMI) and Space Environment Package (SEP).

For the first time in the world FY-4-01 is carrying out an hyper-spectral vertical atmospheric sounding payload,which could conducting a high-precision observation of atmosphere over China and neighborhoods. The observation system is a thousand times more capable than the current system, thus is bound to significantly enhance weather warning and forecasting capability.

FY-4-01 is the first satellite in China which can capture lightning. Lightning Mapping Imager onboard has enabled this function. This instrument is the first geostationary optical remote sensing instrument in China and has filled the gap in terms of lightning observation and satellite-borne detection. This instrument can conduct detection of lightning over China and neighboring areas and take 500 lightning pictures per second. By real-time and consecutive observation of lightning, it can help realize observation and tracking of severe convective weather and provide early warning of lightning disasters.

“FY-4-01 innovatively achieves integrated payload configuration. Such elaborated designation can multiply the function of FY-4-01 while substantially cutting down on the research and development costs. Traditionally the imager and sounder are carried by different satellites to prevent mutual interference. However, FY-4-01 successfully overcame this tough problem in the world and various instruments onboard can peacefully work on the same platform without upsetting each other. What’s more, it realizes comprehensive observations of atmosphere with various means for the first time in the world.” Yu Xinwen, Deputy Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and commander-in-chief of FY-4 satellite program said.

“The combination of imaging and vertical observation is just like a doctor not only having X-ray pictures but also possessing CT pictures. The data from different scanning parts and directions can provide more precise diagnose of diseases. In this sense, FY-4-01 serves as a heavyweight in improving the accuracy of weather forecasting. ”Xu Yinglong, a chief forecaster of National Meteorological Center of CMA and a chief expert of FY-4 satellite application said.

The “Game Changer” satellite makes a breakthrough in satellite image navigation and registration of three-axis stabilization structure on geostationary orbit, kicking the precision of image geolocation into the international top level.

The newest member of FY-4 series will be situated in orbit 36,000 km above Earth at 99.5°E and named FY-4A. It will go through several months of in-orbit testing before putting into trial use. The second and third satellites of FY-4 series have been added to the launch schedule of 2018 and 2020, respectively.

As part of the capable network of weather satellites in China, FY-4 series will also be an important player in the World Meteorological Organization Integrated Global Observing System and make greater contribution to regional disaster prevention and reduction.

Telecom satellite system to encircle globe

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp plans to build a global real-time communications satellite network by 2020, a senior company executive said.

Sun Weigang, chief engineer at the State-owned space giant, said the Hongyan satellite system will be composed of 60 small satellites operating in low orbits and 20 ground stations around the world.

The system will provide a wide range of civilian services such as ground data collection and exchange, ship identification and tracking, mobile broadcasting as well as navigation signal enhancement, he said.

Its automatic ship identification system will receive information from ships around the globe and help monitor their situation. The mobile broadcasting function will be able to transmit audio, video, images and other data. The navigation signal enhancement devices carried by Hongyan satellites will improve the Beidou Navigation Satellite System's positioning accuracy.

"Once the satellite network is formed, it will benefit a lot of sectors, including marine industries, weather forecasting, transportation, environmental protection, geological survey and disaster prevention and relief," Sun said when he announced the plan at the Fourth Aerospace Internationalization Forum in Beijing on Friday.

The company will also establish several data application centers in foreign nations to boost the use of the Hongyan system, according to Sun.

Though government-backed programs such as manned space exploration and lunar missions still dominate Chinese space scientists' agenda, they have also started to pay attention to the rapid rise in commercial space activities.

In China, a commercial space activity generally refers to a space mission paid for by an entity other than the Chinese government or military. Earlier reports quoted experts as predicting that by 2020, the market value of commercial space activities in China will reach 30 billion yuan ($4.6 billion) per year.

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp founded the commercial space company ChinaRocket Co Ltd in October to tap into the launch market. The new company says it can carry out various launch services with China's Long March carrier rockets.

Researchers at ChinaRocket are also developing a 10-metric ton reusable spacecraft to ferry three to five travelers to 80 km above the Earth as part of its space tourism package, according to company managers.

SuperView duo launched by Long March 2D

The first Long March 2D to launch from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center has successfully orbited the first pair of a new civilian multi-sensor commercial remote sensing satellite constellation for China. The launch took place at 03:23 UTC on December 28 from the LC9 launch complex.

The Gaojing-1 remote sensing satellites:

Also known as SuperView-1, the Gaojing-1 is a satellite constellation for civilian remote sensing use that will be operated by the Siwei Star Co. Ltd., Beijing.

Siwei Star is the owner and operator of the constellation. It is held by China Siwei Surveying and Mapping Technology Co. Ltd., the subsidiary of China Aerospace and Technology Corporation (CASC). Beijing Space View Technology Co., Ltd. acts as the exclusive global distributor of the satellite data.

The constellation will comprise four satellites orbiting in the same orbital plane and at an altitude of 500 km. The satellites will provide imagery with 0.5 m panchromatic resolution and 2 m multispectral resolution with a swath width of 12 km.

The satellites will operate with multiple collection modes including long strip, multiple strips collect, multiple point targets collect and stereo imaging. The maximum single scene can be 60 km × 70 km.

By the year 2022, the full constellation will be completed, comprising of 16+4+4+X multi-sensor commercial high-resolution satellite constellation with strong capability to provide data and services to clients across the world. The full constellation will have 16 optical satellites with 0.5 resolution, 4 satellites with resolution better than 0.5, 4 VHR X-band SAR satellites and multiple micro video and hyperspectral satellites.

The SuperView-1 constellation works in multiple modes, such as imaging at nadir, rolling imaging, long strip, multiple strips collect, multiple point targets collect and stereo imaging.

The multiple strips collect is able to realize high-resolution surveying and mapping with large swath width, and the stereo imaging mode will bring large opportunities for EDM production. The SuperView services will be totally commercial and will customize data collection services and develop derived products based on marketing demands.

The Gaojing-1 satellites are based on the CAST3000B satellite platform.

Together with the two Gaojing satellites, the Long March-2D orbited the small BY70-1 satellite:-). BY70-1 is a CubeSat-2U project led by China Center for Aerospace Science and Technology International Communications for school education and amateur radio.

The amateur radio station onboard will provide telecommand, telemetry and FM repeater functions. The spacecraft is 3 axis stabilized and has deployable solar panels. It will operate on a 530km circular SSO.

Xi made the remarks in a letter written to the students from Beijing's Bayi School on Saturday. A small satellite designed and developed by them was launched Wednesday.

The president said he was very pleased to know that the satellite designed by the students would be launched and called on them to become pillars of the country.

Xi hoped that the students would stay hungry for knowledge, keep their interest in scientific exploration and foster their scientific spirit.

He urged the students to inspire more youngsters to embrace science in a bid to contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

The president also wished the teachers and students in Bayi School a happy new year.

On Sept. 9, Xi returned to Bayi School, his alma mater, to visit a laboratory and talk to teachers and students designing the small satellite. He asked them to tell him when the satellite was about to be launched.

The design group told Xi about the satellite launch in a letter and received the reply from him.

The small satellite is the first of its kind designed by China's middle school students. It was launched at Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center and sent into orbit.

The satellite is designed to operate in orbit for 180 days.

Mate, there are smart and stupid people of every race.
You can't really say that Chinese dominate every STEM field in Canada.
You can say that there is a much higher proportion of Chinese in STEM fields in Canada - this is more accurate.

Sorry, I meant dominate numerically, even factoring out koreans, chinese make up more than 40% of the student body, especially comp sci and engineering. Be it uwaterloo, or uoft
And yes their are smart and dumb people in every race, we shouldnt generalize
