China, Russia and Iran will hold a maritime joint exercise, media reported on Tuesday, citing the Russian navy's Pacific Fleet, without releasing a specific time for the drill.

It is not the first time for the three countries to hold similar joint exercises. In 2019, the Chinese Navy, together with its Russian and Iranian counterparts, conducted a four-day military drill on the Gulf of Oman to deepen cooperation between the navies of the three countries. The drill also conveys a goodwill gesture and exhibits China's ability to maintain world peace and maritime security, according to Chinese military officials.

"The three sides need to enhance cooperation in non-traditional security areas, especially in maritime security, as currently some countries continue to cause trouble in the sea, which is apparently a violation of international law," Song Zhongping, a Chinese military commentator, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

It is vital for China, Russia and Iran to ensure the safety of international shipping. Most of Russia's international trade is carried by ship. Iran also relies on shipping for its oil exports. China's imports of oil, gas and foreign trade depend on shipping as well, Song explained.

To ensure the safety of shipping is to safeguard the economic security of the three countries. Therefore, it is normal to see China, Russia and Iran cooperate with their navies, and especially in their joint efforts against regional hegemony and sea pirates, Song noted.

When reporting the joint drill by the three countries in 2019, some US media said it was conducted by "three of America's biggest adversaries." Others speculated that the exercise indicated that Beijing was roping in Tehran and Moscow to form a threesome of "autocracies" and "rally against democracy."

Cooperation among China, Russia and Iran is centered on mutual benefits and win-win relations, rather than forming an alliance and engaging in confrontation. For example, Iran can provide China with much-needed oil, and hopes to increase its economic strength by expanding its energy exports, experts noted.

The Russian navy just observed Chinese navy in the recent exercise around Kuril Sea. They got a big shock. This time Iran turn to observe. I guess this is primary for Iran and Chinese dalliance, but Russian was pulled in to de-emphasized China.

Russia and China have been holding joint maritime drills for the last two years very extensively. This is simply getting to form a larger strategic regional alliance. Makes sense since Iran is really isolated and could do with more geopolitical allies from its standpoint. The only issue remains about how it can boost its trade by circumventing the blanket Western sanctions.

Even if it is willing to pivot completely to the East, there are not too many countries that are willing to forego western trade blocks and give Iran business beyond oil. That alone limits Iran's true potential from being unleashed as a regional powerhouse.

Iranians are smart but their government's overly vocal stance kinda bares any secrecy and leaves little room for their foreign department officials to maneauver internationally.

The newest Varyag cruiser is more than 30 years old. The oldest one is 40 years old. 10 years from now, the first Varyag cruiser will be 50 years old. It make sense for Russia to buy 055. Russia never built any cruiser or destroyer. Only USSR built it.

i don't think russian pride will allow it. Heck china still operates the sovremenny destroyers, kinda hard to to accept they could fall so far behind in just 15 years

China-Iran have made significant progress in bilateral relations over the past year.

China seems to much less heed US Congressional sanctions on Iran now. I think US helped this in a certain way by strongly underlying that only way of relationship with China is hard competition. The rest is hostility.

I think, apart from trade relations which can be slowed down or cut overnight, China has largely given up on the US governments.

Chabahar, isn't that the super duper Indian base? Lolol

It was all talk by Indians. Actually, China will be investing in the port and linking it up with Gwadarb and onto Central Asia.

China will not sell the Type 055 until another class supercedes it. Maybe not even then. It is a strategic level system.

The first Sovremenny till now is about 45 years. 15 years from now, it will be 60 years old. Now hardly any Sovremenny does not have black smoke. The Russian navy suffer the worst decay among all branch of service.

Meanwhile Iran has only a few suicide gunboats. This is enough to sink anyone trepassing Hormuz. Not too good for protecting her oil tankers worldwide.
