China ready to give Bangladesh a higher priority in diplomacy: Ambassador

Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Zhang Zuo has said that Beijing is ready to give Dhaka a “higher priority” in its diplomacy to become a great partner for mutually beneficial cooperation.

“China and Bangladesh share close people-to-people bond, similar national realities, and complementary development goals,” he said.

The ambassador was speaking at the reception he hosted for the 69th anniversary of the founding of China on Saturday at the embassy.

“We would like to preserve our friendship with the people of Bangladesh for generations to come, and we are ready to give Bangladesh a higher priority in China’s diplomacy, in order to become great partners of win-win cooperation, great friends with openness and inclusiveness, close brothers for opening up and innovations, and good neighbours who learn from each other,” he said.

The ambassador said China and Bangladesh have always been good friends during the 43 years of diplomatic relations.

“Especially, after the successful state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping in October, 2016, the China-Bangladesh relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership of Cooperation, and thus started a new chapter in our bilateral relations.”

“It’s worth mentioning that our joint building of the “Belt and Road” initiative is highly fruitful. In 2017, our bilateral trade value reached $16 billion, 5.8 percent higher than last year, with China remaining the no.1 trade partner to Bangladesh; the contracts of international projects signed between Bangladesh and Chinese companies reached $10.4 billion, second in the South Asian region,” the ambassador said.

The ambassador also noted that bilateral trade between the two countries in the first half of 2018 stood at $9.35 billion, a 17.6 percent year-on-year-increase. Chinese investments stand at $85.94 million and $380 million in terms of stock, he added.

“Under the wise leadership of the government of Bangladesh, the diligent Bangladeshi people have made great achievements in national construction and social development,” said Zhang.

He also shared news of some of China’s recent achievements.

“The 19th National Congress of the CPC held in last October announced that Socialism with Chinese characteristics entered into a new era. It also laid down a grand blueprint for building a great modern socialist country on all fronts,” he said.

“In the first 6 months of this year, our GDP growth reached 6.8 percent, staying in the medium to high growth range of 6.7-6.9percent for 12 consecutive quarters.”

“One of China’s main development targets for 2018 is to maintain a growth rate of around 6.5 percent, far exceeding other major world economies.

The Chinese ambassador said that this growth creates important opportunities for all nations, including Bangladesh, and that all were welcome to join China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative in the spirit of practical and friendly cooperation.

This is why I always say, BD should clean up its bribe-taking culture and train its own technical people to build its own civil engineering projects instead of depending upon Chinese money. Its private companies should be encouraged by the GoB to build its own manufacturing plants, and reduce dependence upon import of finished and semi-finished goods from this hawkish China.

There is a proverb in Japan, "A Chinese will sell his mother if it brings him money". SL is completely hooked by China after China gave them a huge amount of loans on prestige projects and SL cannot pay back the money. A similar situation is certainly waiting for Pakistan followed by BD. Burma is paying its debt by selling its gas from the Arakan coast. Read the citation below about the situation in SL.

China won’t lose access... BD will not develop without Chinese goods. I don’t know why Chinese manufacturers still keep their price low when they dominate the market. They should increase their price by 1000% to place Western firms on an equal footing

China has to invest overseas regardless, it's an economic imperative. China has a huge surplus on the current account, which must be balanced on the capital account via outwards investment, outwards lending, and buying overseas assets.

If not Bangladesh it will go elsewhere. It goes to Myanmar too.
