China proposes joint mining of Indian Ocean with India where its deep diving vessel reported to have discovered large deposits gold and silver.

BEIJING: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit here next week, China has said it is "eager to cooperate" with India on deep seabed mining in the Indian Ocean where its deep diving vessel reported to have discovered large deposits of precious metals like gold and silver.

"With quickening oceanic development and increasing mineral exploration in the Indian Ocean, China is eager to cooperate with India on deep seabed mining," the China Daily quoted China Ocean Mineral Resource R&D Association as saying.

Terming India an ideal partner, deputy director of the association He Zongyu told the state-run daily that "China and India are both developing countries and contractors with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) so we have a lot in common and plenty of opportunities for further cooperation."

The association is China's official organisation engaged in exploration and development of ocean floor and subsoil.

Chen Lianzeng, deputy director of the State Oceanic Administration, visited India on April 20 and suggested the two sides enhance cooperation on oceanic research and development. "If we cooperate, we could share the costs, the risks and the benefits," He said.

Proposing the cooperation, He said China and India are on about the same level in terms of the development of deep seabed mining, which makes India an ideal partner.

Deep seabed mining is high-cost and high-risk work, with costs for a mining site topping USD 1.6 billion, He said.

Beijing's proposal for India-China cooperation comes in the immediate backdrop of the completion of the 118-day voyage of the China's deep-sea manned submersible Jiaolong in the southwest Indian Ocean here it reported to have discovered large deposits of precious metals like gold and silver.

During the latest mission in March, Jiaolong successfully carried out 13 dives to observe different hydrothermal areas, the characteristics of hydrothermal fluids and deep-sea biodiversity, gathering a huge amount of data and more than 700 samples.

The surprise proposal comes ahead of Modi's three-day visit from May 14 during which he will hold formal and informal talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang in Xi'an and Beijing.

Can't be done...for energy, resource starved countries like China India Pakistan should look for next gen sources...fusion, nuclear, solar, space whatever but to think that they will hit oil is wishful thinking.

Bro it is not in Indian sea territory. It is international waters...India should think about it.

It sounds like a good partnership but many issues need to be addressed. Will they reciporate such measures in the South China Sea and Pacific near them? What about the environmental toll? Is this going to be a project that becomes an environmental disaster, thus affecting our waters? Remember, its only a matter of time before China squeezes water resources in Tibet. Our only option after that is desalination plants on our coastal areas but would pollution run off from such mining cause considerable damage? Many things to think about.

Why wasn't Pakistan roped in? China doesn't jump into anything without constantly debating it and for their advantage. There must be more value involving us, otherwise they wouldn't choose us over Pakistan.

Bro am also saying the same. China must think about aallowing India for joint exploration of south china sea .Or even in Chinese legal territory in SCS .

Actually this news is not new. Its been going on for several months if not years . India already expressed its willingness to cooperate with China for exploring Indian Ocean and conveyed our interest of doing the same which Chinese yet to answer boldly or with full positive attitude. India won't allow Chinese to have its free ways into Indian Ocean as Recently we expressed serious concerns directly to our Chinese friends as it will undermine our superiority in IOR and its directly affect our national security. these the language we used recently and took oath to stop any Anti India activities in our " India's Ocean " So it will depends upon what China will say or do regarding our companies to explore Chinese water as SCS don't belongs to China entirely. Same for IOR but large parts been controlled by India. So its t
Not the same case .

India was completely caught off guard when China claimed a huge portion of underwater land in the Indian Ocean a few yrs ago under UPA! We have always been reactive, never proactive.

China never heeded our calls till now. The bulk of SCS belongs to CHina, or so they claim. All, I am saying let's see what their real motive is. They didn't rope in Pakistan their all weather ally is a bit strange it seems I think.

We doubt China a bit too much...it is an economic power. Time is to partner and do something new...else west will mine and after few years will preach env concerns. Let's just go for it...spend couple of billion and see what we get...we need to do something new to progress fast else at this rate it will take us 30 years to have a decent middle income country.

I dont think we doubt China too much. All we have to do is look at their actions. it speaks louder than words. West or East, nobody truly gives a f-k about us. Only we care....

As you said China is an economic power yet if there is considerable damage no checks and balances, who will suffer greatly? India or China? its obvious, that our land and ppl will suffer and we lack the reosurces to counter such effects unless we take a lot of factors into consideration. Why is China so interested in mining the Indian Ocean yet does not consider the same in SCS or the Pacific which is much, much closer?

Are quest to develop should not cloud our common sense. We should devise a long term plan, keep in secret and follow out accordingly. Unless, we modify our system of goverance.....I highly doubt India will reach parity with China

You must understand the consequences of any Chinese exploration in IOR without India's consensus. What ever UPA did but Indian Navy always prepared to thwart any such activities. That at this point of time Indian Government and its policies towards National security are delt with serious intent . My guess is that Chinese will have no option to allow India to plunder its seabed and be part of cooperation in IOR . As India already expanding oil exploration operations with the help of Vietnamese . Chinese can do nothing but faded warning about consequences . What happened to those threat ? India and China will sign huge deal in 2-5 days when Indian Prime Minister visits China . That's how you deal with regional powers . War mongering will lead to loss of face and loss of growth while other real enemies will grow thrir military might. China don't need that . So does India . What both will benefit from war between the two ? Nothing but letting each others enemy to overtake .

No one is having problem with doing business with china . But at what cost ? China can't do business with equals. Either Superior powers or Inferior powers . So where will put India and China ? And India for long time gave away our wealth to china in terms of trade which is one sided at the moment 30 :70 ratio . We already expressed our concerns during press release (Modi-Xi) that serious concerns about trade imbalance must be addressed . As china also agreed . The problem is Chinese shake hands with one hand and try to dig a grav with another . Well India is too far for that .

China got permission to mine in indian ocean if they are inviting india to be partner then its good opportunity for india

China on Friday signed a long-expected contract, which has drawn much attention in Indian strategic circles, under which the China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA) will get exclusive rights to explore 10,000 square-km of seabed in the southwest Indian Ocean in an area off the coast of Africa, state media reported.
