China praises Pakistan, downplaying risk of rift

BEIJING: China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday praised Pakistan as a firm partner against terror and religious extremism, playing down the risk that ties could be strained by an attack that Chinese officials blamed on militants trained in Pakistan.

The ministry’s statement was its first response to the attack in Kashgar city in China’s far western Xinjiang region on Sunday, when a group of Uighur men killed a restaurant owner and waiter, and then hacked to death four people.

The Kashgar government said the attack was organised by members of the separatist “East Turkestan Islamic Movement” who received arms and explosives training in Pakistan.

But the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ma Zhaoxu, said his government stood by Pakistan, in comments apparently intended to quash any notion of a rift over the attack in Xinjiang, where members of the Uighur minority have protested against Beijing’s control and the Han Chinese presence.

“Pakistan is an important front in the international fight against terrorism, and has made an outstanding contribution to battling terrorism,” Ma said in a statement on the ministry’s website (????????????????).

Ma did not mention the Xinjiang attack in his comments.

“China and Pakistan are friendly neighbours, and we have developed healthy cooperation in the anti-terror area,” he said.

“China will continue strengthening cooperation with Pakistan” in fighting what both sides deem to be dangerous extremism, added Ma.

China has long treated Pakistan as a counterweight to the influence of India and its ally, the United States, and Pakistan has in turn increasingly turned to China as a counterweight to US power.

On Monday, the Pakistani foreign ministry issued a statement offering “full support” to China after the attack. Pakistan shares a border with China, and Uighurs, including opponents of Chinese rule, have fled there in the past.

Analysts have said that the role of any militant members of the “East Turkestan Islamic Movement” in the attack is unclear, especially because the group appears so weak.

You know I saw a program on TV 2 days ago, they were reporting on CHina-Pak border, they traveled very far, covered wide area, describing the Border as one of the most peaceful Border between 2 countries world has ever seen There was never a need for a fence, I think if Chinese authorities have Intelligence, they should provide them to us, a targeted action can be done, fencing border is a bad idea

Never knew you could read my mind sitting thousands of miles away. But as Tiki says, Chinese have a much different way of projecting their thinking through indirect means. Had that not been the case, those who implied this at local Kashgar administration, would have been sentenced to death by now.

Add this with the existence of anti-Pakistani terrorist groups like TTP that would love to see your ties go bad with China (much much more than us), combined with their hatred and extremist ideology. They would actually assist these anti-China elements very well under the guise of religious radicalism.

the entire central asia and afghanistan is devoid of little or no rule, and for record, pakistan doesnt have any xinjiang indigenous people, they all come from china to earn, the terrorists can recieve better training and financial aid from central asia and afghan then pakistan

Xinjiang connection

THE news from Xinjiang is not good for Pakistan, as China, our closest ally, has claimed extremists trained here are responsible for two deadly attacks in the restive region. At least 19 people were killed in the recent attacks in Kashgar. Chinese officials claim the suspects received training in camps run by the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, a Uighur militant outfit reportedly linked to Al Qaeda. Uighur opposition groups in the West have contested the Chinese claim. But if there is indeed a link to elements within Pakistan, it would not be surprising. Though it is believed that Etim has been significantly weakened, hard-core militants are still said to shuttle between China and Pakistan as Xinjiang shares a border with this country.

In the past leaders of the group have been eliminated inside Pakistan. A US drone strike in North Waziristan reportedly killed Etim chief Abdul Haq in 2010, while the movement’s earlier head Hassan Mahsum was killed by the Pakistan army in 2003.

The Turkic Muslim Uighur people have genuine grievances against the Chinese state; due to the influx of Han Chinese they feel they are being turned into a minority in their own land and that their culture is under attack. The region saw deadly ethnic violence between the Han and Uighur communities in 2009 in which nearly 200 people were killed. While a nationalist movement exists, Etim espouses secession from China.

Any community with grievances against the state of which it is a part has the right to demand its rights. The Uighurs are no exception. However, the moment this indigenous movement starts attracting external support — such as from Islamic militants in Pakistan — there is significant cause for concern. This development reflects the fact that over the years Pakistan has allowed its territory to be used as a staging ground for religious extremists of all stripes. The Foreign Office has offered Beijing “full support” against Etim. It will be taken more seriously if action is taken on the ground to ensure that Etim is being denied access to training camps in Gilgit-Baltistan and Fata.
