China plans Beijing-Moscow high-speed rail

I hope it will not come thru. Seriously, if you want to visit Moscow, take plane is much faster. 8 hrs will settle the journey compare to 2days. HSR is more suitable for less than 2000km journey.

240 billion is an aweful amount of money to waste.

Agreed 200 billion can be invested elsewhere & why would anyone travel 2 days when they can can cover it in 8 hrs by plane & the scenery exuse won't work everytime.a frieght network of Trains is much better proposal & will probably cost much less

The Chinese government announced that China has landed a Russian contract to build a Beijing-Moscow high-speed railway with a travel time of just 48 hours.

The 7000km railway project will cost 240 billion US dollars. The Eurasia connect grew out of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in mid-October. The railway particularly shortens travel hours to Russia's oil-rich city of Kazan from both Moscow and Beijing. Analysts say China's low-cost advantages played a big part in the bidding.

The Moscow project will be the first part of a more ambitious rail pathway that connects China, Russia, Canada and the United States. Officials say the line will begin in Beijing and travel north through Siberia and under the Bering Strait to Alaska before heading south through Canada to reach the U.S. The final destination in the U.S. is not yet known.

If my research is correct, this line isn't just going to be one HSR line. The real benefit comes with secondary freight and regional lines which will accompany this. Freight coming and going from Russia to China through train will boost their trade by hundreds of billions (and of course in China 's favor).

This will also produce cheaper tourist travel, then with stops in countries like Aghanistan, Pakistan and some Russian states, eventually going through Moscow to Europe. Not a bad plan actually. China seems to be hell bent in connecting with the world through non-traditional trade routes, like the cross country railroads, silk highway, etc

It seems so. It is not just an HSR. It is accompanied by other lines for trade. I guess @orangzaib sums it up well.

i wonder it's the follow up of Moscow - Kazan?

Yes, the second news link gives details about the proposed HSR line.

The line is to be build phase by phase and in different locations.

Other than that, there are several project for freight lines between China and Russia as well as inside Russia. All these separate lines are planned to eventually form a huge rail network for trade.

I hope adequate economic feasibility studies are done regarding this project, because I have my doubts over this project.

I simply loathe flying。

Travel by flight is the last option for me(as well as a lot of other people)

Same here.

Having flown extensively over the years, I lost the taste for flying. I am therefore pretty much happy to see rail projects across China.

How much is being paid by each country?

This is too much money!

200 billion could easily pay for school lunches, uniforms and fees accross the country making it easier for poor families to have equal access to education. How can a socialist country not see this!

A rail track to Russia and then what? The path of the tracks goes through areas of Russia where people dont wake up before 12 pm and then only to look for drinks of fermented potatoes.

The Russians have to pay for at least half or this deal is a disaster in the making.
