A project upgrading the railway from Kunyang to Yuxi in southwestern China's Yunnan province has begun recently.

Upon completion, it will link with Yuxi-Mohan Railway, which broke ground on Aug. 31, and become the Chinese section of the railway between China and Laos, People's Daily reports on Thursday.

With a speed of 200 km per hour, Kunyang-Yuxi Railway is a double-track and electrified line. The section being upgraded totals 49.3 km. It is expected to be put into service before the end of 2016.

Construction of China-Laos railway to begin this year

China and Laos will build a railway linking the two countries and other ASEAN members, said Laotian Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad on Friday.

Construction of the railway is expected to begin late this year, Lengsavad said at the 12th China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, from Friday to Monday.

He cited Lao President Choummaly Sayasone as saying that railway will be constructed in honor of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

This is part of china thailand raillway connection from kunming to bankok. So this section should be from kunming to vientiane. then through thailand's nongkai to bankok, which by the way will start construction by china and thailand at the end of this year.

It is a single track project adopting china railway standard with speed of around 200km per hour.

China's railway projects in Thailand, Laos to start

China's high-speed railway projects are finally gaining ground in Southeast Asia, as top government officials in Thailand and Laos attending the 12th China-ASEAN Expo indicated the construction in both countries might start before the end of this year.

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Tanasak Patimapragorn said his country's 840-kilometer project may start this December, linking the northern city of Nong Khai with Bangkok.

Laos is also determined to have a high-speed railway project with cooperation from China in order to transform the landlocked country, according to its Deputy Prime Minister Somsava Lengsavad who gave a speech in fluent Mandarin during the opening ceremony of the 12th China-ASEAN Expo and Business and Investment Summit on Sept. 18, 2015.

As Laos' largest investor, China is also going to help launch a man-made satellite for the southeast country, according to Somasava, who saw both projects as being of historical and strategic significance to the country whose lack of infrastructure remains a massive headache.

The Thai Deputy Prime Minister added that China's "Belt and Road" initiative prompted the realization of the railway project which had gone through 10 years of tough negotiations.

China is looking to build a high-speed line from Kunming all the way down to Singapore, passing through Laos, Thailand and Malaysia, a project that would increase China's GDP and those of the involved nations by US$375 billion, according to China Railway Corp.

China's railway industry has not gained a presence in the ASEAN region overnight. Beijing had lobbied heavily, trying to sweeten the terms of its bid to become more competitive faced with strong rivals like Japan.

"We have encountered many problems during the bidding process overseas such as the one when Indonesia decided to scrap plans for its first high-speed railway at the last minute," said a company official. "But we weren't discouraged and continue to market the advantage of China's high-speed railway to the overseas public as well as related authorities."

Deputy Prime Minister Somsava Lengsavad said the most troublesome problems had been solved and hoped that the project could be launched before Dec. 2, which is the 40th anniversary of the founding of the republic.

Laos only had 6.5 km of antiquated railway, and its population of six million has had to make do with a dilapidated road network being little more than a chain of muddy potholes. The country, which suffered decades of war in the 20th century, is eager to achieve transformation from landlocked backwoods to globally linked manufacturing hub.

China's inclusive growth abroad!

Which cannot be stopped because there is demand for it.

Most countries are now able to tell between a foreign policy that is based on sanctions, threats, and military interventions and a foreign policy that is harmonious, development-oriented, and non-interventionist.

The New Normal.

China Plans 31 Bln USD Investment for Border Zone with Laos
2015-10-19

China has announced an investment of 200 billion yuan (31.4 billion U.S. dollars) in an pilot economic zone on the border with Laos.

The investment will cover more than 240 projects in such fields as transportation, education and energy for the Mengla zone in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province, according to the provincial development and reform commission and the Xishuangbanna government on Monday.

The 4,500-sq-km zone, approved by the State Council, China's cabinet, in July, includes an economic development park at Mohan on the border.

The Mengla pilot zone will be important for strategic cooperation between China and Laos, a comprehensive transport hub linking China with the Indo-China peninsula and an economic growth engine for the border area, said Ruan Jianzhong, an official with Yunnan planning department.

Construction started on a railway linking Yuxi to Mohan, part of the China-Laos international railway, in August and preparations for Mengla airport are underway. The railway and airport are expected to be in use by 2020.

The zone will focus on agriculture, biological industries, processing, logistics and cultural tourism, said Luo Hongjiang, head of the Xishuangbanna prefectural government.

This is fantastic news for Laos.

Hope that Laos is able to grab this opportunity with both hands!
