China, Pakistan to consolidate friendship, deepen co-op

BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Pakistani leaders agreed during meetings in Beijing Thursday to consolidate their "all-weather" friendship and deepen pragmatic cooperation.

Xi Jinping, Chinese Vice President and Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China, met Khalid Shameem Wynne, Chairman of Pakistan's Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

China had conducted fruitful cooperation with Pakistan in a wide range of areas in recent years, and would continue to support Pakistan in important projects concerning the national economy and people's livelihood, and promote the common prosperity of both countries, Xi said.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Pakistan and is China-Pakistan Friendship Year.

The two nations would hold events covering politics, trade and economy, the military, culture and sports and education to further people-to-people exchanges, promote friendship and deepen pragmatic cooperation, Xi said.

Wynne said Pakistan was proud to have a great friend such as China and was willing to support China in issues concerning China's core interests

Liang Guanglie, Chinese State Councilor and Minister of National Defense, also met with Wynne Thursday.

In recent years, the two militaries had seen multi-dimensional cooperation in training, equipment and technology and humanitarian assistance, which had actively helped to enhance building of the two armed forces, promote bilateral relations and safeguard regional peace and stability, Liang said.

China was willing to consolidate and deepen Sino-Pakistan all-weather friendship and push forward friendly cooperation between the two countries and the two militaries.

Wynne said the Pakistan-China friendship existed not only between the two peoples, but also between the Pakistani armed forces and the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Pakistan appreciated the support China had given in areas such as economy, security and expected the friendship with China would develop to a high level, Wynne said.

Wynne, who is on a five-day visit to China, co-chaired the eighth Sino-Pakistani Defense and Security Talks Wednesday with PLA Chief of General Staff Chen Bingde.

Chinese Defense Minister( lower pic) is a three star general and not a politician? Or did I get the wrong pic?

PLA ranks only goes up to three stars since the title of marshal is not in use after Mao last appointed the 10 marshals of PLA. A three star general would be the equivalent of a 4 star American general/ NATO O-9 since the PLA has a ranking of senior colonel and would be the equivalent of a American brigadier.

This is not necessarily a negative development from Indian POV. China has potential to be a responsible power.
