In 2002, India and China did about the same amount of trade (exports and imports) with their four big South Asian neighbours, namely Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the ountrNepal and Sri Lanka. In 2007, China was doing 36% more than India (See table: China Versus India).

well India has it problems with some nasty neighborhoods...and the countries with which we have a nicer relations have India higher than China while our situation with Bangladesh is getting better and with Pakistan too!Trade with SAARC nations accounts for only 2% of India's net trade!And the good thing is that despite of so many barriesr our Trade wit Pakistan id growth way faster than China's and has surpassed friendly China's 2002 levels....

that is really good news.. BD has a huge potential if its leadership has a good vision. No need to Blame your Neighbours. as you have sea access, and with enormous population BD could have done a china long back.

Have a question what does the BD offer back to china. I mean what has BD opened to Chinese industries. I am asking this because even some big indian industries are shocked to their core when competing with Chinese. they are too cheap and efficient.

Good move by china.A bilateral free-trade agreement(like what china have with pakistan)would have harmed bangladeshi industries but this is unilateral and highly beneficial to bangladesh.This is indeed an excellent opportunity to to improve economy of bangladesh.Congrats to brilliant diplomacy of present bangladeshi goverment who is creating good ties with all it's neighbours.

This Chinese goodwill has very little if anything to do with Awami League regime diplomacy. China as a true friend watching how Bangladesh economy was systemetically undermined and how Bangladesh strategic standing was destroyed by one sided subversive Awami regime policy for strengthening indian hegemony.

This Chinese move specifically address ( in some degree) that strategic void and destruction created by Awami regime india centric submissive policy.

FTA is a two way trade liberalisation not necessarily duty free acees of every goods. But in this case its unilateral duty waiver for Bangladesh. China does not require any reciprocal gesture from Bangladesh.

Any breakup of the trade by import & export? This will provide a better perspective of the SAARC-China trade.
I will not be surprised if the trade balance is heavily in favour of China.
