What's new

China, not India, builds a bridge in Bangladesh, but Modi govt believes all is not lost yet

However, it is clear that Bangladesh is unable to build its own infrastructures, be it railway or bridge. It is playing India against China to do the infrastructure development.

No country has ever developed without the participation of its own people. Do you guys really think BD will be an exemption from that trend?
Try play around with partner pitting against each other will end you have no allies.

Nigeria and Mexico has decent amount of oil, however Nigeria has not developed and Mexico is semi-developed. I am not mentioning Venezuela and Iran as both are under sanctions.

What is needed for any country to develop most is respect for property rights, in other words good law and order. You will find that in EA nations and in UAE also in Saudi Arabia. ME folks were not good in management so they hired all the top management ( tax free income lured loads of skilled people ) folks from England while the Arabs maintained law and order.
You are certainly right about a set of abiding laws in a country that everyone of its citizens follow to not to get punished. However, ME countries including SA has been following the very strict Sharia laws since the last fifteen centuries without getting them developed.

Now, with oil reserves, these countries have built a few infrastructures, but this is with the major participation of non-Sharia Western engineering and construction companies.

So, in the end, we can say that it is not just a set of laws that can develop a country. Development is another matter and I believe also that building a few infrastructure projects by asking foreign companies is no recipe for progress and development.

Development of infrastructures should be done by BD local engineering and construction companies and not by India or China. This is the method China and India have been following. All the developed countries of today developed with self-help.

China and India are the latest examples. They are doing whatever infrastructure projects by their own companies.

But, BD is begging other countries to do the same. It is not progress or development. Pakistan did the same and it is now suffering with a staggering $93 billion loan payment issue. BD is now almost near that figure.

So, instead of pitting China against India, BD should follow the good examples of other countries. BD is losing the trust of both countries, but our political and PDF brats love to glorify it.

BD needs infrastructure to develop, you just can't wait for the days when BD will have all the local talents needed to build these mega bridges.

I hope some day there will be a Bangladeshi company who will have the employees from local talent pool to undertake these mega projects, however that day is not here now.
In absence of local talent you got to hire foreign companies to get the work done. BD badly needs energy, roads, and bridges now, just can't wait around for the local skills to develop.

You cannot get through to him on this topic. He expects BD to develop project management skills overnight. Even if we build them ourselves he will call them "fancy" projects. Let him be.

Chinese mega project management skills are simple outstanding. Methodologies they use can be compared to a fine performing football or basketball team !

There is a reason when they work on a mega project they insist on bringing their entire team to work on it. Those that are involved in agile SW development will understand the time it takes to build a finely tuned team !

So, how do you propose many other conceivable infra projects like many other bridges or highways? Do you propose them to be built by foreign companies. Was it not necessary for the GoB to institute a system to learn when Koreans designed and built the Jamuna bridge and now the Chinese are building the Padma Bridge. I have read one account that Korea has been asked to build another bridge somewhere over the Meghna.

The loans are piling up. Repayment will continue until BD exports and remittances remain high. However, not only Vietnam but also Laos, Cambodia and many African countries are coming up with cheap labor to produce low value garments in their respective countries.

So, better we think long term, and build industries, develop manufacturing of engineering products including machines and engines, and also build our own infrastructures with our own people. I think, failing to do these basic things, all our hi fi infrastructure projects with foreign loans will not develop our country.

As a result, BD will virtually remain an underdeveloped LDC as it is now.

You are assuming that because UAE has a few attractive high rise buildings, therefore, it is a developed country. No, UAE is a high income country because it has huge oil fields, but is not a developed country when its own manpower remains non-productive.

It exports oil and asks European companies to do quite a few attractive building projects that the UAE people cannot even maintain. However, we can forgive UAE because it has only a few number of citizens.

But, I have been to Nigeria for two short stays. It sells oil and asks the European to build roads, highways and ports, and I found that country is unable to do the maintenance works of those same infrastructures.

It is because the Europeans build these, take away the Contract money and leave. Now, Nigerians do not know how to repair the traffic lights or the broken roads or highways.

We are following the footsteps of Nigeria and another country west of India. These countries are already suffering and our sufferings will start after a few more years unless we gear our development works with our own money and manpower.

I give you one example, that is WASA water distribution system. BD is unable to refurbish it because the govt has failed to create experienced private companies to do the job. It is same every where. Think of traffic light or road repairing system in Dhaka. Or think of waterlogging every year.

Our govt is doing some superficial projects to create a kind of euphoria among the citizens.

you are right bangladeshis should create own technical manpower pool to develop and maintain own infrastructure.

Korea gained independence from Japan in 1945, but learned mostly from Japan both before and after this year and has promoted itself to the status of developed country now.

British left our country in 1947 and left many infrastructure works done by them. For example, Hardinge Bridge, Teesta Bridge, Bhairab Bridge and about 3,000 km long railway line among many others. But, we seem to be incapable to learn from these and from the foreigners. Now, we cannot build any thing necessary to the country by ourselves.

But, here you are talking it is short period of time that disallows us to do our own jobs. So, how many centuries do you think BD people will take to learn something that was learned by others within a few decades?

Is it another 50 centuries or more? The way things are moving, I am sorry to say BD will remain forever at the receiving end of donations from other countries.

dont worry modi will send wipers/brushes made in india to clean the bridge and claim a victory over china as always

Our people are unwilling to receive any Indian charity, but India keeps on pushing it while it systematically is bullying its Muslim citizens.

How many times do I have to repeat myself for things to get through to your head?
Bangladesh has only seen major infrastructure projects in the last 25 years which you conveniently ignore to cover up negligience by rulers pre-Hasina.

Local companies are already building flyovers and other smaller infrastructure.

Which foreign company is managing existing infrastructure?

Local companies are doing most of the ground work for the major projects like Padma bridge, Dhaka MRT and the LNG Terminal. Only managing contractors, designers and consultants are foreign.
Such skills to build MAJOR infrastructure cannot be developed in 25 years even with Korean/Japanese work ethics.

You want local amateurs to experiment with multi-billion dollar projects for fun just to impress you? People like you would be the first to criticise any failed local venture.

do something to create own technical manpower pool who can make CPEC and other infrastructure , how long you will depend on chinese money and chinese labour to build infrastructure for you .do something yourself than worrying about modi indian jharu pochha .
