China moves to counter India with arms sales to Pakistan

Beijing’s first export of J-10C jets marks step-up in decades-old arms relationship with Islamabad

China will deliver 25 J-10C fighter jets to Pakistan within weeks as part of a deal that will bolster Islamabad’s military capabilities against mutual rival India.

Beijing’s first export of the advanced jets marks a big step-up in its decades-old arms relationship with Islamabad and entails providing its ally with some of the latest equipment that China’s own armed forces are using. China will also broaden its support to Pakistan’s navy.
The first batch of the combat aircraft is being tested in Chengdu, the base of its manufacturer Chengdu Aerospace Corporation, according to a journalist at a Chinese military publication.
“They will be transferred to Pakistan once Pakistan air force pilots and technicians have completed an introduction to the aircraft,” he said.

Senior officials in Islamabad said the jets would be delivered before the end of the month.
Last week, Chinese and foreign military watchers posted photos and a video showing several J-10C aircraft flying the colours of the Pakistan air force on social media.
China is also selling Pakistan four Type 054A frigates, the first of which began service in November, and is expected to begin delivery of up to eight Type 041 submarines, its quietest attack submarine, this year.
India, which has been engaged in a stand-off on its Himalayan border with China for nearly two years, believes the arms deliveries to Pakistan are an attempt to amplify the threat from Islamabad. India shares long land borders with both Pakistan and China.

“There’s a clear strategic nexus between China and Pakistan,” said Brahma Chellaney, a professor of strategic studies at the Centre for Policy Research, a New Delhi think-tank. “That nexus is clearly designed to contain India, to pin India down and keep it preoccupied. That’s the Chinese strategic aim.”
He described the latest arms deals as a significant shift, adding that “China is now selling or transferring its top of the line weapons systems to Pakistan”.

The J-10C aircraft will help Pakistan close the air-power gap with India following New Delhi’s acquisition of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France. “This is our response to [India’s] Rafale,” Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, Pakistan’s interior minister, said when he revealed the J-10C agreement in December.

The new Chinese ships would boost Pakistan’s capabilities in the Indian Ocean, an area of strategic importance for Beijing.
“They want Pakistan to have naval bases ready that China could also use, and to be able to protect them,” said Siemon Wezeman, an arms trade expert at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
“The Chinese have shown that they will sell to Pakistan when others won’t. I suspect that China is very easy to persuade [to sell], not only for commercial but also for political reasons,” he said.
India is also planning a naval expansion. The navy’s deputy chief said late last year that it aimed to increase the size of its fleet from 130 vessels to 170 by 2027, including four frigates being developed in partnership with Russia.
Despite the upgrades, Chellaney said the Himalayan stand-off was draining India’s defence resources. “The Indian navy is supposed to be undergoing modernisation, but the modernisation is happening at a relatively slow pace, largely because of the land military confrontations that India faces,” he said.

Solving #3 would not solve #2, IMO

Their issue with Islam is not entirely dependent on Pakistan alone, they have a genuine hatred for Islam similar to how people hate homosexuality, it comes almost natural to them. Even solving issues with Pakistan would still keep them suppressing their Muslim population.

Once their fabricated unity built upon hating Pakistan disappears, communal tensions will rise because there's nothing to bind them.
You may want to say "ethnic" tensions instead of communal tensions.

Normalizing with Pakistan would certainly dampen the communal (anti-Muslim) aspect to a degree & that may be sufficient to avoid an expected communal blood-bath. This would be good for India & the region. I am dumbfounded to see how much Indians obsess about Pakistan. It is truly unbelievable. It is essential that this be toned down several notches for peace to pervail.

Indians lived peacefully once & I hope that they shall do so again. A communal war would suck the region in & that would be just tragic on epic scale. If Pakistanis have any real sense & good of Ummah at heart, they would actively to try to steer Indian policy in the direction of peace and away from a communal war. This is where China figures in a peaceful scenario. By arming Pakistan China is assuring that Indians do not get carried away by bravado & bluster. The current Indian leadership is truly myopic & self-deluded. Only a show of strength will keep them in check. Chinese aggressiveness is actually good for peace at this time.

21st century should truly be Asian century. India, for its own sake, should make sure that it be so. Only respect & peace will make it so, not war-mongering.

I don't think it would be enough to stop the upcoming religious bloodbath, Indians simply despise Islam and having neutral relations with Pakistan won't change that.

I'd argue they'd accept it and still continue to work to dismantle Pakistan from within.

I also don't see their attitude changing, at all, while our side is busy begging for peace talks, they are busy sitting together with their most talented minds devising plans to break apart Pakistan and making promises and deadlines for independent states.

I fear our incompetency and lack of general foresight will not end well for us. India's game plan is exactly what Pakistan used to claim, "bleed them with a thousand cuts", except we are failing at it and they are winning.

I have spent a fair amount of time, looking at India and i have come to the conclusion that India genuinely has tremendous amount of potential. There are a few things that is keeping it back,

1. Extremely high population
2. Internal communal/religious/ethnic strife
3. Border issues with Pakistan & China

If India can control the over population, get rid of these Hindutva fanatics and resolves the land disputes with both China and Pakistan they will be another global power house. In case they are unable to control those 3 areas of concern, i reckon it will result in a major civil war and balkanization of India with millions of people dead.
This is like saying Pakistan would become a First World country if it gets rid of the elites and their stranglehold on the populace. Ain't gonna happen.

India will just genocide anyone standing in the way and supress them, slowly but surely.

High population is something they don't have to work too hard towards, generally better education about family planning and policies.

India will progress.

The generation old Western dream of pitting India against China. Pakistan plays the spoiler every time.

This article was a complete waste of time.

China has superior strategy. India should make peace & work for the regional connectivity & development.
We are not comfortable with a communist China nor is the world comfortable with this.
China can be accepted as a world leader only if the people in china have the right to choose their leaders, no matter how painful the process might be.
Democracy is the best form of governance as of today.

It's not that deep, why impose your values on others?

Chinese don't even care and they are directly being ruled by this government, so why should anyone else?

Does India even care outside of the territorial disputes?

In my view, there is one area that Pakistan needs to address in a comprehensive manner. Not just with a military strategy, but also with an economic and political balance toward it's Province of Baluchistan. As it stands, Pakistan has not realized the tremendous economic and strategic potential that exists for the country, once therein Pakistan establishes peaceful and sustained rule of law within the Province.

In there lies the endemic problem the country has faced for decades, and that is the absence of the rule of law and it's adherence by all citizens of the state, including and particularly the ones who make as well as the ones who uphold the State Law. Corruption should not only be eradicated, but prevented from ever taking root within the state. This needs to span across the board, be it politicians, bureaucrats, civil servants, local law enforcement, judiciary and the attorneys who defend the law against criminals, be they politicians or civilians.

Herein, Pakistan has the opportunity to establish a template which once implemented in Baluchistan, will serve as an instruction manual for the rest of Pakistan's provinces. Equal opportunity and rule of law will allow the eradication of foreign sponsored terrorist threat and afford Pakistan to exploit the geostrategic depth of the country to establish greater military bases for the development of Strategic Weapons' deployment. But this can only happen when the state has established it's full writ within the province, and this cannot be accomplished without the full trust and support of Baluchis themselves, who have felt the cold shoulder by their own federal government, for decades.

CPEC and Pakistan Military's geostrategic depth depends on how Pakistan will go forward in expanding it's economic power, to become a major regional player.

Do your own research then decide, thats all i m saying

.... Pakistan lost it's independence when the corrupts took over and attempted to lead Pakistan to a road of a failed beggar state and as a Vassal of the colonialists and thanks to China this was thwarted. ...
China did not save Pakistan. China sat back, watched it's neighbour burn and waited until Pakistan made the US it's enemy (OBL Raid, Salala Attack, highlighting Balochistan internationally, threatening nuclear disarmament, etc.).

Only then the Chinese came in with CPEC after the US had totally cornered Pakistan globally.

It felt as though Pakistan had to prove itself to China first but China has not applied this policy to any other nation.

.
India:
- Siding with US against China
- Selling weapons to Chinese adversaries
- Claiming Chinese territory as their own
* China sells Weapons to Pakistan *

India: Surprised Pickachu face !

I am not sure how serious is this gloom of yours. If you are that set in your thinking then I do not think there is much left to discuss. We can agree to disagree & move on.

This is the same old hypocritical message.
If Pakistan does or buys something, it is inherently against someone else, especially India. Yet, if India or anyone else gets anything, no ulterior motives are applied.

The usual double standards BS when it comes to Pakistan.
Pakistan is the 5th largest country in the world, it will fill its defence needs to meet potential threats, like every other country in the world.

This BS double standard message needs to stop.
