All roads do not lead to Dhaka.:p:

"DHAKA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Work on a joint Chinese-Bangladeshi venture to build a transformational highway bypassing Bangladesh capital Dhaka is well underway.

The mega expressway will link the industrial belts around Dhaka with the seaport at Chattogram and the northeastern Sylhet region, bypassing the congested capital. Around 400 million U.S. dollars will be spent on the four-lane artery.

The country's first road public-private partnership (PPP) initiative is 60 percent controlled by China's Sichuan Road and Bridge Group, with local actors Unique Dream Consultants and Shamim Enterprises holding the remainder. The Dhaka Bypass Expressway Development Company has financing agreements with the China Development Bank (CDB) and Bangladesh Infrastructure Finance Fund Ltd (BIFFL).

Yang Jian, a project manager working in Bangladesh, told Xinhua that 70 percent of the initial work had been completed. The bridge pile foundation is 50 percent completed. "In 2024, we will complete the whole expressway," he said."

Yep!

We need more infrastructure built on PPP terms.

Small government, with very small tax revenue collection, is what we need.

Let most infrastructure be built by the private sector.

All express ways need to be toll roads.

Let our rich friendly Asian countries build and operate most of our infrastructure.

And our NGOs need to continue to focus on education, primary health and poverty alleviation.

Central government needs to be very small with no more than 8-10 per cent tax collection.

I would imagine 4 lanes isn't exactly future-proof... strange decision to go with four lanes, given how vital this highway will be once completed... I don't know what sorts of Industries exist in Sylhet but I'd imagine quite a few atleast... anyone have more info on this ?

I think it should be ok and this is just a bypass road to allow traffic to travel from Chittagong to Sylhet without going through Dhaka

The whole Sylhet district has just 13-14 million people.

Industries are mainly natural gas extraction, farming and tourism. There are a few IT parks that have been built or will be built.

The government is widening the current 2 lane road to a 6 lane highway from Dhaka to Sylhet that I think should be ready by 2024/2025.

Little by little the government is implementing the plan to have a world-class infrastructure system in place by 2036.

It's not Sylhet, but Hobigonj, is the industrial epicenter of the area. Big companies like Pran-RFL, Matador, Akij & many others has moved in the area & making it an industrial hub. This bypass will be a big boon for them without a doubt.

When will our geniuses ever build a bridge here? Everything in BD goes through Dhaka now.

. .
The Padma bridge is just a little north of here and 50km south of Dhaka.

That is better location as allows a much more direct link between SW BD major population centres and Dhaka.

Routing everything through Dhaka makes a hub and spoke topology which is why there is heavy congestion in Dhaka. It's a moronic design. Someone from Satkhira trying to go to Chittagong must go to Dhaka first and then go to Chittagong, just try to visualize it in the map.

I believe already feasibility study has been started to connect Chandpur to Shariatpur that will reduce distance from Khulna to Chittagong by 200 km and will connect 11 south east districts with 21 south west districts.

I heard alternative to bridge a tunnel is also under consideration.

Now bridge over Meghna for south connectivity

The economy is expected to further flourish with easier connection between southwest and southeast

The government has decided to construct a bridge on the River Meghna, at Chandpur and Shariatpur points, to connect the country's southwest and southeast regions.

Did you read my article?

BD and China are building a bypass road and so you can travel from Sylhet to Chittagong without going through Dhaka and vice-versa.

Due to limited land use BD cannot build too many roads and railways directly between cities and so has to make use of as many existing roads and railways and build bypasses around Dhaka to minimise congestion in Dhaka and reduce travel time.

Yup agree.
Its lack of planning if anything.
Also BD did not have the resources to build all those mega-long bridges, until now.

It's not a lack of planning.. it's plain stupidity.. they (the big wigs) in Dhaka want the whole country to revolve around Dhaka in an effort to keep everything nice and controlled..

Ridiculous because Bangladesh is a pretty unified state and a little decentralisation wouldn't cause any harm at all.. but we have power hungry snobs at the helm who want to exercise total control over everything and anything.

It is unbelievable how primitive our road infrastructure is that you have to travel North to go E-W/W-E.
Bridges are too cumbersome to build in Bangladesh thanks to soft soil and strong river current. Given the population size, we need at least a dozen river tunnels, mostly connecting East to West to unleash the full economic potential. If we can build these tunnels, we can clock double digit genuine GDP growth without BBS having to doctor anything.

The Karnafuli tunnel project was relatively smooth. I say we order/lease a dozen tunnel boaring machines straightaway as these take time to obtain due to limited global supply.

We need decentralisation stat, people wouldn't need to visit Dhaka for even the most mundane of government related tasks then.

Heard a whole dedicated secretariat is being built on a char in Chittagong, which is welcome news, alot of ministries will be transferred here including the ones related to trade, export, industry and the sorts...

Let's see how it goes.
