A freight rail service linking the northeastern Chinese city of Harbin with the Germany city of Hamburg has been launched.

The new service, which passes through Mongolia and Russia, will deliver goods to Europe twice as quickly as maritime deliveries.

Gao Zhanguo with Heilongjiang's department for Silk Road Economic Belt projects says the new rail link has obvious benefits.

"The China-Mongolia-Russia corridor is the biggest one among the six land corridors along the Silk Road Economic Belt. It runs in a core area linking Russia, Mongolia, Japan and South Korea. It stretches across Eurasia from the Pacific Ocean to the Baltic Sea. The rail service can make freight transport more convenient."

It's expected the line is going to carry some 4-billion yuan worth of freight every year.

The launch of the Harbin-Hamburg freight line comes just days after the launch of freight train services between Xinjiang's capital, Urumqi and Moscow.

Look, the longterm transpotation network depart from Chengdu.

To attain the objectives like 4 hours to Wuhan, 6 hours to Beijing, you got to build a real 350kph HSR ASAP. The current 200kph line makes it 8.5 hours from Chengdu to Wuhan.

If u dig into news in Chinese, you will feel frustrated that construction standards of HSR in western China has been deliberately lowered from 350kph to 250kph, like Chengdu-Lanzhou HSR. Lack of competitiveness of HSR in western China, however, is good news for air industry. Chengdu Airport is one of the busiest international airport in China.:(

Yes, safety is most important. Ours are mountain areas. We don't build rail, we dig holes in mountain.
