A member of a Muslim minority group has been sentenced to two years in a Chinese prison after forming online discussions groups to teach about Islam.

Huang Shike was arrested in 2016 in Xinjiang province, three months after he formed a discussion group about Muslim worship on the messaging app WeChat, according to the official website China Judgments Online. Huang, 49, taught about the Quran, Islam's holy book, in another WeChat discussion group. More than 100 people were members of each group, the website said.

The discussion groups "disturbed normal religious activity" and violated laws about using the internet to discuss religion, the website said.

Chinese authorities have dramatically increased surveillance and police patrols in Xinjiang, fearing the spread of militant Islam which they believe has infiltrated the region from Central Asia.

Huang is a member of the Hui minority. There are more than 20 million Muslims in China, mainly among Uighur, Hui and other ethnic minorities. China's 10.6 million Hui -- descendants of Muslim settlers and Chinese who converted to Islam -- have long endured strained relations with the Han, who constitute more than 90 percent of China's 1.37 billion people.

Chinese officials have increasingly urged local governments to better assimilate Muslim minorities into Han Chinese culture, as many ethnic policy hard-liners have decried a trend of what they call "Arabization" among Chinese Muslims.

Once a critical thinker should be a critical thinker, always. If you become an atheist following the critical thinking route, you will also be free of superstitions.

On the other hand, if you follow atheism as a fad, because everybody around is following it, you will still be superstitious because your mind is not working in the way it should be and that's the case with Chinese.

due to Chinese are Atheist, we can accept any religion.
in fact, religion issues are financial affairs for china. government is collecting taxes，and religious organizations are also collecting contributions just like taxes. government collect more taxes from the rich， less taxes from the poor. but religious organizations are not, they collecting money as much as possible, especially from those poorest grass roots.
So more religion, more poor people, less tax, and result weaker government.

I never questioned China or its policies, I welcome the decision.

I am pointing out hypocrisy/ double standards of few members from a particular country ,
when other countries try to treat religions equally they have one reaction and when it is China they have another,

In those thousands of years, how long have you been completely atheist. Or say majority of your population being atheist?

Chinese as far as I see are pseudo atheists. They are highly superstitious. Chinese may not follow any mainstream religion, but they are deeply entrenched in superstition.

And many of them believe in the spirits of the ancestors.

Secondly, China is a highly westernized society which always tries to copy the west. Even the ideology of communism is a western idea no matter how many times you try to make it 'Chinese' by quoting ancient texts. Every religion has some qualities that can be attributed to communism and socialism.

Well, it is difficult to contradict you on this site.
But look up how many of the top scientists are atheists/agnosts. Almost all developed countries have a high atheist population (atheist majority in most), and the percentages are rapidly increasing.
