(Reuters) - Courts in China's far western region of Xinjiang have sentenced 19 ethnic Uighurs to up to six years in jail for promoting racial hatred and religious extremism online, in the latest crackdown on what China sees as violent separatists.

All but one of those jailed were from the heavily Uighur southern part of Xinjiang, including eight from the old Silk Road city of Kashgar, the official Legal Daily reported on its website.

Many Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking Muslim people who call energy-rich Xinjiang home, chafe at Chinese government restrictions on their culture, language and religion. China says it grants them wide-ranging freedoms.

In one of the cases, the suspect went on illegal websites to download material which "whipped up religious fervor and preached 'holy war'" and "whipped up ethnic enmity", the Legal Daily said in its report late on Wednesday.

"This created a despicable effect on society," the newspaper said, citing the court ruling.

Another suspect was jailed for spreading materials from overseas via the Internet which "advocate religious extremism and terrorism", the newspaper added.

While the report did not specify the ethnicity of those jailed, their names and the location of the courts where they were sentenced indicated they were all Uighurs.

China accuses armed Uighur groups of having links to Central Asian and Pakistani Islamist militants, and of carrying out attacks to establish an independent state called East Turkistan.

Many rights groups say China overplays the threat posed to justify its tough controls in Xinjiang.

The region, which lies strategically on the borders of Central Asia, India and Pakistan, sees frequent outbreaks of ethnic violence.

In April, 21 people were killed in clashes near Kashgar, the deadliest unrest since July 2009, when nearly 200 people were killed in riots in the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi.

The "Pakistani Islamist militants" that these people are linked to, which the western media never likes to name, are Tehreek E Taliban Pakistan, the same group thats been fighting an insurgency against the Pakistan government.

Urumqi was originally a Dzunghar town, hence the Dzunghar origin of its name which is neither Uyghur nor Chinese.

After the Dzunghars were conquered by China the city was first settled by Han and Hui (Tungan) Chinese, with Chinese style mosques. The Uyghur mosques and buildings are a recent addition, see this

China runs two different school systems in Xinjiang, one Uyghur language and one Chinese language. Uyghur students are allowed to go to either one they like. The Uyghur schools allow Hijab, time off for Ramadan and other holidays, the Chinese ones don't. When the Uyghurs complain about the Ramadan restrictions, its when they are attending a Chinese school and complaining

They often choose to go to the Chinese language school because it would advance their education oppurtunities in China because they could go to Chinese cities in the east like Beijing or Shanghai. Uyghurs from the cities sre more likely than rural areas to send their children to Chinese language schools.

I think this system needs to be reformed, but pointing at Chinese language schools only and claiming the government restricts all religious activities in Xinjiang is dishonest and lying.

Good Work :china:

Fighting against Islamic terror is something that would unite India, China, US, Russia and even Pakistan. Out of these countries, Pakistan suffer more from Islamic terror than any other countries.

To some rights groups, criminal's rights trump victim's rights. That's why we see criminals go through lengthy legal battles here in the U.S. while victims lie under ground for eternity. Those who died during those riots in Xinjiang should haunt those rights groups. I wonder how they would feel if their loved ones were killed during the riots. Would they still advocate letting extremists run around on street?

You are spot on...if China, India,Russia and Pakistan unites then the support and resource base for Islamic Militancy will be gone...But you are forgetting...The source and sponsor of Islamic millitancy is still exists...So they will simply change their resource outsourcing centre from Pakistan and other nation to another nation....

So to some extent it is unfair to blame Pakistan entirely...as long as their Master exists, Islamic millitancy will survive and spread throughout.....
