Israel Defense Minister visits China

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak is set to depart Saturday night for China, where he is scheduled to conduct a number of meetings with local officials.

The Defense Ministry stated Saturday that it would be the first visit by an Israeli defense minister in 10 years, and that it would highlight the complex relationship between the two states.

Barak will be a guest of his Chinese counterpart, General Liang Guanglie, and will also meet with the local chief of staff as well as a number of other high-ranking officials.

Barak's visit took months to prepare, and one source associated with the preparations said it was "sensitive, but important and consequential".

The defense minister is set to discuss with local officials such issues as the Iranian threat, the peace process, and regional terror. "Every meeting on such a visit has important long-term consequences for relations with Israel," the source said.

Israel & China to Increase Exchanges

Israel and China will increase exchanges before next year's 20th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties, a high-ranking Israeli government official said Monday.

Rafael Barak, Director General of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, made the statement at a press conference in Beijing during the last day of his five-day visit to China which began on May 26.

He brought a group of diplomats with him for a seminar on deepening China-Israel ties.

"I brought with me a group of 25 Israeli diplomats, who are not dealing with China in their daily life; they are dealing with other continents and other issues," Barak said. "But this was our decision to bring them here to a seminar in which several Chinese personalities will introduce to them what China is today."

Barak also said he made Chin his first stop after taking office earlier this month, because it is the second most important economy in the world after the United States.

Trade between Israel and China hit 7.65 billion U.S. dollars in 2010, a 47.6-percent increase compared with that of 2009.

Barak said he had a busy schedule during his visit with various meetings. His only interaction with locals came during a visit to Beijing's Yaxiu market.

"I had an opportunity to go to the Yaxiu market to buy something for my wife and kids," Barak said. "It was my main interaction with the people, plus the officials and businessmen between the two sides. They were all very interesting."

During his stay in China, Barak exchanged views with Chinese foreign affairs officials on relations between the two countries, bilateral economic cooperation and the Middle East peace process.

He said Israel also looked forward to bolstering cooperation with China in economics and trade, science and technology, culture, education and renewable energy, while consolidating its traditional friendship with the country.

I don't mind exchanging technology and trading with Israel, but China should keep it at a distance. Wouldn't want to alienate the Arab states as well as the Muslim population.

Chinese Chief of General Staff meets Israeli Deputy PM & Defense Minister

Chen Bingde, member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and chief of general staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), met with Ehud Barak, the visiting Israeli deputy prime minister and defense minister, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse on the afternoon of June 12.

Chen Bingde said that the Chinese and Jewish nations have made important contributions to human civilization. Historically, all the two nations went through hardships. The two sides had mutual sympathy in hard times, helped each other and established a profound friendship.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the bilateral relations have witnessed sustainable and stable development. The Chinese side appreciates and thanks Israeli Government's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support for China's reunification.

The military relations of the two countries, as an important component part of the bilateral relations, have made considerable progress in recent years. There is a great potential for the development of friendly cooperation between the two militaries, and the Chinese side is willing to continue to work together with the Israeli side to enhance cooperation in personnel training and other fields and promote the relations of the two militaries to a new level.

Barak said that though far apart, Israel and China have maintained good bilateral relations. The Israeli side attaches importance to developing military exchanges and cooperation with the Chinese side, and is willing to work together with Chinese friends to make joint efforts to bring the relations between the two militaries to a new level.

Amos Nadai, Israeli ambassador to China, and others were present at the meeting.

Wrong. Making good relations with both sides is what "non aligned" truly means. India, for example, has done a good job balancing relations between Russia and US.

good relationship with israel could hardly bring us any benefits with the close monitoring of the US. israel and US has been blending together . don't server china's interests.

What does Israel have to offer to China aside from a few weapon systems? Nothing.
What does the Arab world have to offer to China? Oil and opportunities to export arms.
Who's more important?

Israel is hated pretty much world wide. Keeping distance from it is consistent with non-align movement. Only an idiot would trade relationship with Arab world in favour of close relation with Israel.

If what we hear about Israel running America is true. Then perhaps negotiating with Israel and dealing business with them is the equivalent of getting a grip with America? Don't take me seriously on it, it was just a random thought. :P

China to strengthen military cooperation with Israel

China is willing to further strengthen military cooperation with Israel to contribute to the development of country-to-country relations, State Councilor and Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said Monday.

Liang made the remark in his talks with visiting Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Liang said, "China values relations with Israel and is ready to expand and strengthen pragmatic exchange and cooperation between the two militaries, so as to make contributions to the further development of relations between the two countries and the two militaries."

Liang said the Chinese and Israeli people have deep traditional friendship, and the bilateral relationship has maintained a good momentum of development since the establishment of China-Israel diplomatic ties.

Liang hailed increased political mutual trust and the achievements the two sides have made in all areas through pragmatic cooperation in the past 19 years of diplomatic ties.

Barak echoed Liang's remark, saying that he hoped the two sides could expand common ground, strengthen friendship and learn more from each other through his visit.

He also pledged to lift pragmatic cooperation between the two nations' armies, and make joint efforts with the Chinese side for a better and deeper military relationship.

Your ignorance simply underestimates the importance of Israel and the bilateral exchange between China and Israel.

Israel offers China a possible pathway to reconciliation and partnership with the US. Israel, being both a partner of China and India, is able to bridge the gap between China and India.

Arab countries offer oil, but increased partnership with Israel (and subsequently India and the US) offers peace and less anti-China measures. You tell me which one is more important: a bit of oil, or peace.

Israel is "hated" by worldwide CIVILIAN opinion. Governments have much more important things to worry about than the "Zionist threat".

And like I said, by doing this, China is not trading relations, but simply adding another one. You don't see India dropping relations with the US after forging a relationship with Russia, do you?

china should stay away from the whole middle east mess imo
