what happens if you hypothetically exclude tibet, uyghur and inner mongolia? thats 4 million square km right there. if you add the adjoining sichuan, qinghai, gansu then thats roughly 60% of China.

why ethnic minority provinces make up such a large chunk of the total? for administrative purposes they should be divided into smaller units, to address economic grievances of both minorities + han residents, and facilitate better accountability for development.my two cents

The population in these province is significantly smaller than the other provinces.
