THE INDIAN diplomats should be more active in projecting India's position on the border issue with China. Generally Speaking, western countries do not appreciate India's view that China was an aggressor and India a victim in the 1962 India-China war. Maxwell's book, India's China War clearly blamed India and Nehru for annoying the Chinese government with statements that were not supported by facts.

Nehru's off-the-cuff statement at the Madras airport while he was on his way to Colombo was rather undiplomatic. Nehru had said: "I have ordered the Indian Army to throw out the Chinese". The Indian Army knew nothing about it. MEA and Defence Ministry were not on the same net. India suffered a humiliating defeat, thanks to the wrong policies of the duo- Nehru and Krishna Menon.

Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State, USA has written in his latest book on China that Chairman Mao Zedong had advised restraint when he had a chat with his Chinese field commanders. However, Indian troops inched forward to positions that India had not claimed its own even before. Nehru's provocative statements made matters worse.

Kissinger has quoted Mao as saying that under the circumstances he had no choice but to reciprocate the sentiments of a neighbouring country. Courtesy demanded this action. Sarcasm was perceptible. In fact Kissinger has opened the book with a Preface mentioning India-China border war. As a general rule the Chinese nation does not take recourse to extreme steps in settling issue and just waits letting a problem find its own solution.

Mao did not intervene in different disputes directly. He believed in setting one country against the other and preferred to relax in Beijing. The Chinese Emperors used to put a barbarian against another and just did not bother to look beyond China.

Kissinger is of the opinion that India does not matter much to China but to India, China not only matters a lot but is an obsession. Having known the Chinese army officers and people for some time and taken a close look at them, I hope they continue to display the old imperial attitude and give others the royal ignore. It indeed will be a way out of a shooting war and pave the way to maintain status quo.

Should there be any minor border violations across the rather ill defined international border, the issue should be sorted out mutually through the existing mechanism. In case of air violations, when India lodged protests with their counterparts, the matter was attended to and recurrence prevented. Many a time the troops exchanged greetings on Holi or Diwali or the Chinese New Year and friendly attitude prevented ugly episodes. Our Raksha Mantri has said in the Parliament that the incident of Chinese soldiers intimidating Indian cowherds was taken up at the appropriate level and recurrence prevented. Our cattle are now grazing at the said spots like they did before.

Why is india always bulyying china?

From another third-party (non-Chinese and non-Indian) source:

New York Times - India Measures Itself Against a China That Doesn’t Notice

MUMBAI, India — It seems to be a national obsession in India: measuring the country’s economic development against China’s yardstick.

Indians, in fact, seem to talk endlessly about all things China, a neighbor with whom they have long had a prickly relationship, but which is also one of the few other economies that has had 8 percent or more annual growth in recent years.

Indian newspapers are filled with articles comparing the two countries. Indian executives refer to China as a template for development. Government officials cite Beijing, variously as a threat, partner or role model.

But if keeping up with the Wangs is India’s economic motive force, the rivalry seems to be largely one-sided.

Well, Indians get to buy all the weapons from America. But China cannot. That is one thing that Indians can be proud of.

So, is this what's hurting you inside.. sorry, nobody realized china's pain.

Go beg to US and EU ... or fix Tiananmen's wrongs.

What has India got to do with China being an outcast -- it's entirely your own making.

According to the BBC Country Rating Polls, China is viewed more positively worldwide than both the EU and the USA.

And ALL THREE are ranked far higher than India.

Not only the BBC Country Rating Polls, but also the Pew Global Research Polls. I.e. The two major international polls.

Sorry jbond, but apparently the world does not share your opinion. The world ranked China more positively than the EU, and ranked the EU more positively than the USA. And all three are ranked far more positively than India is. :azn:

Polls will remain polls.. Realities and International diplomacy and relation are not run using poll results.. So if you use the polls as a parameter to prove something, it's gonna be a fail!!

I don't know what's the measure of how positive countries view each other but definitely u can't argue it on the basis of polls of few thousand people on the street..

My point stands, if you are seen so positively then there shouldn't be so many actions in progress to target you or hurt you.. Food for thought, Think about it!!

Is that why China is still the fastest growing major economy, while India's growth has fallen to 5.3% and soon to be the first BRIC being downgraded to "junk" status? :P

Is S&P targeting China?
