Through decades of laying the foundation, China really took off in the 2000s, The 21st century belongs to China:
A Chinese city promotion video back in 2007:

LOL,“面的”!
Haha, old memories...
But even the small prefecture-level cities used Xiali (Daihatsu Charade) as taxis in the early 90s:

And later replaced by VW Jetta and Santana, etc...

In your opinion, what were the foundations laid by China for the explosive growth in the 2000s,
And which aspects were the most important?

Deng Xiaoping's reform and opening-up policy is most widely regarded as the direct reason for the later economic growth, but a comprehensive industry, especially the heavy industry, built up during Mao's ara is also critical, other factors including emancipating people's thoughts ( free of hierarchy, advocacy of science, hard-work and ethics, gender equality, etc) which were promoted started from Mao's ara are also important.

I have read a biography of Deng Xiaoping, and few other writings.
I was led to believe that infrastructure matters were more important, like roads, physical infrastructure, development of SEZ model etc.
But in your view other aspects played a greater role.
Interesting.

Because Chinese like me think that the foundation that Chairman Mao laid is more important than what Deng Xiaoping did.

Hard work: literally, Chairman Mao banned opium and other drugs that flooded before 1949. This alone increased at least one-third of China's labor force. After all, you can't expect a dizzy person to work hard.

Morality: also literally, the Chinese people in 1949 were very simple. Chairman Mao destroyed the moral values of the old times (including but not limited to the parents' decision on the marriage of their children, the elders of the family could kill the younger generation at will, and the fate of ordinary people in the countryside was determined by the local big family rather than the government). It is very important that everyone has the right to express his or her own opinions. Otherwise, a man who could have been a scientist would have been forced by his family to farm at the age of 21 to support his 16-year-old wife and five children.

Gender Equality: half of the population in a country does not have to do housework and take care of children all their life. Instead, they do most of the work with the same pay as men. That is, women can hold up half of the sky. Is there any more to say?

I would also like to add some of Chairman Mao's great contributions:

Eliminate a large number of infectious diseases with high mortality rate: the average life expectancy of China was only 35 years during the Republic of China, and 68 years when Chairman Mao died.

Carry out extensive education to provide enough educated and disciplined workers for the future reform and opening up: in 1949, 80% of China's total population was illiterate. By the death of Chairman Mao in 1978, the illiteracy rate of China's young and middle-aged people had dropped to 18.5%. The literacy rate of China 42 years ago was higher than that of India in 2020.

Design and plan a large number of reservoirs and dams in China: in August 1931, 140000 people were drowned in the Yangtze River flood alone, and 141 people died in 2020.

Building China's industrial base: China does not need to import rifles and bullets like India does. China's foreign exchange can be used to buy new technologies and raw materials.

.
Mao is more important than anyone else. Mao has given China security. No development is possible without security.

Mao Transformed a Nation, while Deng reformed a system.
