Two more Japanese nationals have been detained in China on suspicion of spying, bringing the number of Japanese held by Chinese authorities for espionage to four, news reports said on Sunday.

A Japanese woman in her 50s has been held in Shanghai since June for her alleged involvement in spying on the country, the Mainichi Shimbun daily said.

The woman, who runs a Japanese language school in Tokyo, had visited China frequently, Kyodo News said, adding that the purpose of her visits was unknown.

Separately, another Japanese national in his 60s has been detained in Beijing on similar charges, the Mainichi said.

China reported, in late September, it had arrested two Japanese citizens for suspected spying, a move likely to strain already tense ties between Asia’s two largest economies.

The detentions – the first since 2010 involving Japanese nationals on such charges – come as relations remain clouded by disputes over islands and Tokyo’s wartime history, despite close trade links.

Suspicion of spying? Lol. Oh my what, were they postgrad workers taking selfies close to a tank?

These are serious and false allegations, truly.

They will go a due process of law, my friend, and, if found guilty, they will have to bear the consequences of their acts. But I do hope they will be proven innocent by the law. I strongly believe that, if found guilty, there would be connections with Japan-US military partnership against China.

It reminds me of past allegations on Japanese civilians being arrested for supposed charges of espionage, but later cleared. In fact In September 2010, China arrested four Japanese nationals working for construction company Fujita Corp., accusing them of entering a restricted military area. Three were released in 10 days and the fourth a little more than a week later. If my memory serves me right.

Anyways, I hope that our Japanese citizens are treated with decorum and respect while under Chinese custody. We also adjudicate diplomatic etiquette and hope that our Japanese citizens are given access to Japanese consular support systems.

We would hope this matter is resolved judiciously, objectively, and positively for both sides.

Hopefully, like in the past cases, this one will too be solved amicably.

On diplomatic maturity, I believe both nations are miles away from less experienced states. I have full confidence on both sides on that part.

The arrest was made in the port city of Dalian in northeastern China’s Liaoning province, which borders North Korea, the official Dalian Daily said in a report on its website.

The suspect, Ken Higuchi, was being investigated by the Dalian City National Security Bureau on suspicion of spying against China, the report said, adding that prosecutors had approved his arrest.

The character given for Higuchi’s first name could also be read as Takeshi or Takeru.

It was unclear from the report, however, whether Higuchi was a new case or whether he had been detained earlier, and the latest development was his formal arrest.

China detained six Japanese nationals in March on suspicion of illegal activities. Four of the six returned to Japan in July, three of whom were there doing geological research into hot springs, according to their employer.

Also in July, China’s foreign ministry said that a single Japanese citizen was being investigated on suspicion of harming China’s national security.

Reuters was unable to contact Japan’s foreign ministry by telephone. Monday was a national holiday in Japan.

China’s relationship with Japan has been strained for decades over the legacy of Japan’s wartime aggression, while a maritime territorial dispute over small islands in the East China Sea has in recent years added to the suspicion between the two sides.

In 2010, four Japanese nationals were detained in China on suspicion of entering a military zone and taking photographs without permission.

At least two Japanese citizens were arrested on suspicion of espionage in 2015. Last year, China said it was investigating a Japanese citizen on suspicion of endangering national security.
