Beijing (CNN) -- Money rewards are coming in for a woman who rescued a bleeding toddler left for dead last week by multiple passersby in southern China.

Two hit-and-run drivers rammed into Wang Yue, 2, one after another, as she walked on a narrrow street in Foshan.

More than a dozen people walked, cycled or drove past as she lay bleeding in a busy market, sparking a global outcry on the state of morality in a fast-changing society.

Wang is in critical condition, her brain showing little activity despite earlier subtle movements in the lower body, said her mother, Qu Feifei.

China: Hit-and-run video sparks outcry

Good Samaritan laws in China But despite the many villains in the story, it has also turned the spotlight on an unlikely hero: A 58-year-old scavenger.

In the video that has sparked outrage globally, Chen Xianmei moves the baby to safety, becoming an instant symbol of understated decency in a nation analysts say is obsessed with climbing the economic ladder.

"I didn't think of anything at the time," Chen said Sunday. "I just wanted to save the girl."

Two government offices in Guangdong province, where the hit-and-run occurred, offered the Good Samaritan a total of 20,000 yuan (US $3,135), according to state-run Xinhua news agency.

Wang's mother has said she does not understand the behavior of the passersby, but wants to focus on the positive.

"Granny Chen represents the best of human nature," she said of her daughter's rescuer. "It's the nicest and most natural side of us."

On Sina Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, the story continued to be the No. 1 topic after generating more than 4.5 million posts along with a "stop apathy" online campaign.

As the outrage over morality continues, a steady procession of well-wishers pours in, offering gifts, money and support to the toddler's family.

Really think there is something here- I'm hearten to see and read this. There is by all accounts a national conversation going on within China stemming from this incident about its “ social values”. A countries conscious does come into play and reflects in its govt’s mandate (most of the times) - I hope the country's conscious speaks out loudly to stop the support of genocidal dictators like in Sudan and countries of ill repute.

We can all differ on politics but we should agree on basic ethics

Bad bystanders and good Samaritans. Unfortunately samaritans are few and arrive late

In many French channels on internet there is the video where we can see the video of the guy who is driving
horrible
they say that the guy said : "when i first hit her, i fought if she survived i would pay much more penalty than if she was dead. so i pass a second time"
i don't know if it is true but this kind of people is an animal

18 people sees her lying there dying but none stops to do anything? This has changed my perception about China. It seems that communism has ingraved inhumanity to people's minds. Those who didn't lift a finger to do anything even though they saw the kid are not humans in my eyes. They are lower than animals!

It was the same man?! Are the Chinese authorities hunting down this animal?!

How come somebody can ignore an injured two year old girl? Pathetic...they should not even be called animals. It is even an insult to animals

He has been charged with willful murder, and now will likely be sentenced to death for the incident.

There had been a few high profile cases in the past where people stopped to help injured people, only to be blamed for the incident by the very person they rescue and their relatives.

Don't let this change your perception of China. You did not know enough of her backgrounds.

How can it not change my perception. A couple of months ago i read in a newspaper that these kinds of incidents in China is very common because when rich people kill by hit and run they don't pay any compensation. So it is a very common occurrence in China. Especially after this incident where 18 people pass by her without doing anything, that is completely another dimension! How can so many people ignore a 2 year old bleeding kid, maybe her intestines were all over the place goddamn! I don't know if mainstream China regard the value of human life any more.

You are welcomed to your own beliefs.

I'm in no way condoning this lack of action but this is a not so rare phenomenon in other parts of the world too. (just need to google) Whether she is a little girl, a teen or an old woman people should help the victims. What I don't like is a whole ethnicity vilified because of a single incident.

Remember buddy, even before this, the stereotype was that Chinese people are "soulless robots'.

Nevermind the fact that it is so common across the world that it has a syndrome named after it, nevermind the fact that this is the first widely publicized case in a nation of 1.3 billion people... Or that it has attracted such condemnation from across the spectrum of Chinese society.

It is easier for many to simply stick with their stereotypes. Let them continue to underestimate us.
