China FM: China to complete construction plans for Dong Lang (Doklam) subject to local conditions

Yes, China needs to have a more clearly defined India strategy, until now Chinese leadership has held a one-sided wishful thinking that it can accommodate India in a win-win proposition. It is obvious that India is not in bed with China, rather, it's a willing member of a camp of world powers that are hostile to China's rise. I believe things will be changing from this point on.

As for Modi's gamble, India did not walk away with anything tangible but alienating a good-willed neighbor. Indians will always find a reason to claim a victory, that the way they are. IMO it is just an inferiority complex disguised as superiority.

The main thing is we now have full control of the land area of Donglang.

Which means the decision to build the road or not is solely a Chinese decision, of which the decision seems to be: Yes. :enjoy:

.
I don't think India cares about alienating a good-willed neighbor at all. Ever since CPEC, India has made up her mind that China is a major threat to India. In this case, India has successfully damaged China's credibility in the world. Pakistan may question how seriously China regards her own security, let alone theirs. Pushing projects like OBOR requires a stronger credit so that other countries are more willing to cooperate. They need to know when under threat, how willingly Chinese protect the project.

Well, national security is not defined like in the wild west, where the one fires quickest wins. Being a toughest yakuza is one thing, being a wise business leader is quite another. Many of us share this lousy feelings that China lost this opportunity to kick the shxt out of the offender, but there is also a 2500 year old Chinese wisdom at work:上兵伐谋,其次伐交,其次伐兵,其下攻城。

We should not fight a battle in place and time of enemy's choice.

Whether there's a lesson for India to be drawn that's up to that slum land. For China it's a wake up call that our neighbor do not wish to have a peaceful coexistence with us. Whatever benefit of the doubt there was about India, this stupid move has done the slumdogs no good. However the slumdogs here believe their goal has been accomplished by preventing the construction of the roads on our territory. They shall see who is the one that got humiliated at the end of this story. India must be put on the list of enemies of China which we will have to fight somewhere in the future. Gotta thank Modi for enforcing that perception, because that's what India is an ENEMY.

A very good article, thoroughly analyzed. That professor is correct, many media have quickly jumped to the conclusion that the victory belongs to India and the slumdogs here particularly with the support from some Southern monkeys were so high as if they had tasted the highest quality of cocaine. The arguments used by the professor pretty much sums up what we have been saying all this time.

Exactly! I was surprised how few Indians could see through the veneer of their "victory".

Doklam and Doklam plateau are two different things, China wanted to own Doklam not just the plateau, the road till Doka La essentially already covers the whole Doklam plateau. When we station troops there, we have de-facto control of Doklam plateau. Strategically, it was the plateau that mattered, the last big piece of flat land there facing Siliguri. Use google 3D, the plateau area is only at the top left quarter of Doklam, the rest are essentially river valleys with no strategic use.

So when Indians entered the Doklam plateau area, their main aim was not road obstruction, it was road destruction of the completed roads in Doklam Plateau. Why else do you need to bring in 2 excavsatros, you could have used only kumbaya troops instead.

Map from Indian analyst. Doklam plateau is from Batang La, Merug La, Senche La to Doka La, looks like a diamond, essentially the whitish area crisscrossed by the roads there. We completed roads from Merug La/Senche La to Doka La, essentially grade 40 roads, then interference from Doka La happened when we tried to extend to Gyomochen. Gyomochen is not a plateau but it was the original trijunction as per 1890 agreement.

I remember India's concern was that:

1) China was bullying Bhutan by occupying Bhutan's territory, and that India was bound by mutual defence treaty to help Bhutan

2) China's presence in Bhutan's territory was a serious security threat to India's Chicken's Neck corridor, due to the strategic location

But now, apparently they don't care about either of these points anymore. Extending the current road for a few km doesn't have nearly as much strategic impact as Chinese control over Donglang. And they were happy to unilaterally retreat and hand over control of Donglang to China.
