BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhua) -- China has made historic breakthroughs in protecting water ecology and the environment in recent years, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment said Tuesday.

Through a battle against water pollution from 2018 to 2020, all cities at or above the prefecture level had eliminated 98.2 percent of the 2,914 "black and odorous" water bodies nationwide as of the end of last year, said ministry official Zhang Bo at a press conference.

All industrial parks in provincial-level regions or above had installed facilities for wastewater disposal, Zhang said. Cities at or above the county level had rectified more than 10,000 cases of irregularity concerning sources of urban potable water.

During the three-year period, the Yangtze River, China's longest river, saw water quality of its main stream rated at Grade II or above for the first time. Grade II is the second-highest within the country's five-tier water assessment system.

Looking ahead, Zhang said the ministry will extend the work on black and odorous water bodies to the county level with tailored solutions and set a blacklist for cities where such polluted water reemerges.

Efforts will also go into protecting water sources and speeding up ecological restoration in the country's major river basins, Zhang added.

Tree Planting Robots for Ecological Restoration and Desert Afforestation

Desert reforestation efforts often occur with expensive and capital-intensive methods. The process is typically extremely slow. This project aims to accelerate the process of ecological restoration and desert afforestation using robotics and AI technologies. Like the industrial automation, the key is to standardize the process and reduce the device costs, replacing a labor-intensive afforestation process by a machine-intensive one.

We tested our robots in Alasan, Inner Mongolia in September, 2019.

A new type of grid for straw squares, a net in the shape of brush, were newly developed, a new breakthrough in the desertification control tech, at the Zhongwei sand fixing forest farm. It is able to improve the efficiency of sand control by more than 60 percent and reduce the usual cost by over 10 percent.

New AI Proves to Be a Trash Sorter Extraordinaire
GarbageNet has the potential to divert compost and recyclables from the landfill

Eggshells, fish bones, vegetable scraps – when items like these end up in the landfill rather than the compost bin, the consequences can be greater than most people know. In compost bins, some of the carbon from the food scraps is converted into soil and locked away into the ground. But in the landfill, where the food scraps are deprived of oxygen, the carbon is converted into methane and released into the atmosphere as a potent greenhouse gas.

This is just one example of why sorting waste properly is important. But let’s face it, many people do not have access to compost or recycling bins, or simply don’t know or care enough about the importance of sorting their waste correctly.

In the search for a solution to this trash-riddled problem, one team of researchers in China has developed a novel AI program capable of identifying and sorting garbage into appropriate categories. Using a three-pronged approach, it is able to categorize new garbage items it has not yet encountered and achieve an overall accuracy rate of 96.96 percent. The AI is described in a study published May 18 in IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence, and led the researchers to a first place finish in the HUAWEI Cloud Garbage Classification Challenge in 2019.

China leading the way with carbon capture technology: report
Source: Xinhua| 2021-11-24 10:31:13|Editor: huaxia

LONDON, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- China is outpacing its rivals in the race to develop new carbon capture technologies, as it pushes forwards with plans to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, The Times newspaper has reported.

In the last financial year, China generated 81 percent of all new carbon capture patents registered, making it by far the world's largest producer of new carbon capture technologies, the London-based newspaper quoted an analysis from BDO, one of the world's largest accounting and consulting networks, as saying on Monday.

In the second place, the United States produced 9 percent of all new carbon capture patents, while Britain lagged behind other industrialized nations in generating only 1 percent, it said.

Of the 203 carbon capture patents registered last year, China produced 164, America 18, while Britain only two, it added.

[My country's first million-ton CCUS project is fully put into operation, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1 million tons per year]

On August 29, Sinopec announced that my country's largest demonstration base for carbon capture, utilization and storage of the entire industry chain and the first million-ton CCUS project in China - "Qilu Petrochemical - Shengli Oilfield million-ton CCUS project" was officially launched. The gas operation marks that my country's CCUS industry has begun to enter the middle and late stage of technology demonstration - mature commercial operation.

The project can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1 million tons per year, which is equivalent to planting nearly 9 million trees. It is of great significance to the establishment of an "artificial carbon cycle" model, and will provide more abundant engineering practice experience and technical data for the large-scale CCUS project construction in my country. , effectively helping my country achieve the "dual carbon" goal.

Carbon capture, utilization and storage is referred to as CCUS, that is, the carbon dioxide emitted in the production process is captured and purified, and then put into a new production process for reuse and storage. Qilu Petrochemical - Shengli Oilfield million-ton CCUS project captures and provides carbon dioxide from Qilu Petrochemical, and transports it to Shengli Oilfield for oil displacement and storage, realizing the integrated application of carbon dioxide capture, oil displacement and storage. The project covers more than 25 million tons of ultra-low permeability oil reserves, and a total of 73 injection wells are deployed. It is estimated that the cumulative injection of more than 10 million tons in 15 years will increase the oil by nearly 3 million tons, and the recovery factor will increase by more than 12 percentage points. China's 1st mln-ton-level offshore carbon capture & storage demonstration project, Enping 15-1, was put into use Thur in Pearl River Estuary. The well helps inject CO2 captured during oil production into saline aquifer 800m under the seabed, which can store 1.5+ mln tons of CO2.
