China cuts official contact with Taiwan over new president

BEIJING: China said Saturday (Jun 25) that communications with Taiwan had been suspended after the island's new government failed to acknowledge the concept that there is only "one China".

Relations between the two sides have grown increasingly frosty since President Tsai Ing-wen won Taiwan's leadership by a landslide in January and took office in May, ending eight years of rapprochement.

Beijing and Taipei have held regular, official communications since 2014, but that has now stopped, according to China's Taiwan Affairs Office.

"The bilateral communication mechanism has been suspended," TAO spokesman An Fengshan said on its website.

Although Taiwan is self-ruling after splitting with the mainland in 1949 following a civil war, it has never formally declared independence and Beijing still sees it as part of its territory awaiting reunification.

Beijing is highly suspicious of Tsai, whose Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which replaced the Beijing-friendly Kuomintang (KMT) party in government, is traditionally pro-independence and has warned her against any attempt at a breakaway.

Beijing said it had cut contact because Taiwan had refused to acknowledge the "1992 consensus" - a tacit agreement made between Chinese officials and the KMT that there is only "one China" but each side is allowed its own interpretation.

Tsai's presidential predecessor Ma Ying-jeou recognised the consensus and oversaw an unprecedented thawing of ties from 2008 to when he left office in May.

But, while Tsai has said she wants to maintain peaceful relations with China, she has not backed the consensus or the "one China" concept.

Her presidential victory tapped into voter fears that Beijing was eroding Taiwan's sovereignty through closer ties, and that trade agreements with China were being made secretly, benefiting big business, rather than ordinary residents.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, the official body for communications with Beijing, would not confirm contact with China was now on ice.

"The government will continue to keep the door open for cross-strait communication and make every effort to safeguard the existing mechanism," it said.

Tensions have been exacerbated by recent deportations of Taiwanese fraud suspects from Kenya, Malaysia and Cambodia to Beijing, rather than back to Taiwan.

Taipei accuses Beijing of "abducting" its citizens from countries that do not recognise the island's government.

The latest round of deportations Friday, which saw 25 fraud suspects deported from Cambodia - a close ally of Beijing - triggered an angry response from Taiwan.

"It is inappropriate for China to impede cooperation to fight crime for political factors," the MAC said.

Tsai is currently on her first overseas trip since taking office, visiting allies Panama and Paraguay.

That visit comes as speculation grows that China is putting increasing pressure on the island's dwindling number of diplomatic allies to switch allegiance to Beijing.

“I have problem of saying Chinese language. I’m sorry”
——The new taiwan president said these words when she had an interview with a low-level US officials
Such a incapable vixen is not worth contacting。
Her current support rate falls below 50% already.
Administration team only 35%.
Good luck with them.
Much much worse than Chinese National Party (KMT) in their first month in 2012.
And Taiwan high-tech companies are flooding to mainland China with salary for fresh graduates in Taiwan even less than mainland graduates!
No one would expect such upside down situation 10 years ago.

And her lips and hands were shaking.

That was one of the greatest humiliations the local government suffered in modern history, honestly.

My professors were so angry and shamed.

She is a goner; as I feel the air here among people who used to be crazy about her.

And with the total failure of the DPP, the unification forces inside the KMT will make a strong come back; that's almost for sure.

Mainland, in the meantime, did not cut any ties, unlike what the title says. Official contact is there to stay; only contact cut is with the leadership itself so long as they do not make clear about One China Principle.

On the other hand, two of my professors are flying to Mainland to teach in fall. One is a famous expert on South China Sea. I like to go along with him, LOL.

cannot wait to see this happen! that's the biggest contribution DPP could do for the reunification of China.
Yes.
The best scenario.
DPP changes the constitution of Republic of China, the best excuse for mainland China to interfere.

Mainland is the root, bro. Impossible to cut it off without cutting off one's own source of life.

People do not understand that the disagreement is a political one (not historical or cultural-racial), and it is between KMT and the CCP. Has nothing to do with DPP. DPP is an artificial implant by the foreign interests (after they lost hope on KMT, perhaps) and it is a fake entity.

DPP going radical (it has not, so far) would not be a bad thing. Last time they went radical, the result was Mr. Ma and under him China-Taiwan province interaction skyrocketed. If the services agreement had been signed, Taiwan would be more integrated than, perhaps, Hong Kong LOL.

But, the agreement will have to wait until the next, more pro-unificationist, KMT government

I had the pictures of Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) somewhere. It is located in Taipei. I will post them if I can find.

ARATS: Talks to Continue If SEF Authorized to Confirm 1992 Consensus
2016-05-21 12:01:20 Xinhua Web Editor: Zhang Peng

The mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) has said that its negotiation and contact mechanism with its counterpart in Taiwan will be maintained if the latter is authorized to confirm their adherence to the 1992 Consensus.

In a statement released on Saturday, the ARATS said that its stance and sincerity toward cross-Strait talks with the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) based on the 1992 Consensus remains unchanged.

According to the ARATS, its negotiation and communication mechanism with SEF was formally authorized by cross-Strait authorities based on the common political foundation of the 1992 Consensus, and the two organizations only resumed talks in May 2008 after confirming this foundation.

"Over the past eight years, the two organizations held 11 talks, signed 23 agreements, consolidated the common political foundation and boosted benefits for the people," it said.

Mainland needs to put forth a discriminatory investment policy against "pro-independent" Taiwanese business. We should not allow those SOB to make money in Mainland then turn around finance DPP in Taiwan. "You are either with us, or against us"!

Exactly.

CPC can apply the squeeze by denying entry to any pro-independence forces and cutting off their business links.

CPC is far too accomodating to Tibet independence, Uighur independence, Hong Kong independence and Taiwan independence.

China needs to be a lot more ruthless.

Use Chinese intelligence agencies to do what the CIA does to America's enemies. Make the life of pro-independence forces an absolute living hell.

China always plays defense, instead of playing offense.

Look how US does that to Russia in terms of economic sanctions, travel bans, pressure on Russian sports, pressure on Russian companies, pressure on Russian leaders.

China need to take a page out of the US playbook and find weak points and constantly apply pressure on them.

I think it is time China need to unify Taiwan, but wait this president next move is to call independence for Taiwan. What you guys think? Will there be flames on Taiwan with forces?

she's a disappointment in the looks department. i thought Taiwanese women looked like this:
