China constructing world's second largest hydropower station

With an installation capacity of around 16,000 Megawatts, the Baihetan station will surpass the Itaipu station, which straddles Brazil and Paraguay, by 2,000 MW, and sit only behind China's Three Gorges Station (22,500 MW) in terms of production.
The station is sited on the lower reaches of the Jinsha River, which itself is located in the upper stretches of the Yangtze River, and will run along the border between the Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in southwest China.
The total cost of the project is more than US$26.5bn, with the Chinese Government relocating nearly 100,000 residents in Sichuan and Yunnan to accommodate the scheme.
The Baihetan station is expected to start generating electrical power via all its units by the end of 2022.
Upon completion, it is expected to produce an average annual power output of 62.4bn kilowatt hours, which was two-thirds of Beijing’s total power consumption in 2015. Every year it will save up to 19.6 million tonnes of standard coal and 51.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
