China cancels international fleet review
China says it has canceled the international fleet review it had planned for this month, to which it had invited foreign navies.
The review was scheduled for April 23rd in Qingdao, Shandong Province, to mark the 65th anniversary of the beginning of the Chinese navy.
Navy spokesperson Liang Yang announced the cancelation on Tuesday. The reason he gave was that many Chinese navy personnel are currently engaged in the ongoing search for the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner.
He said the navy is in a special situation, since nothing has been found after many weeks of searching. The families of the missing passengers are deeply upset.
But earlier this month, the United States decided not to send warships to the event.
Japan was not asked to send vessels to the event this time, nor was it for the previous such review 5 years ago.
Japanese officials say the cancelation may be related to the US decision not to send ships despite being invited to do so.
