China has called for a "thorough discussion" on whether countries that have not signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) can join the 48-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
"The group is still discussing accession of non-signatories and major differences persist," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a news briefing on 23 May when asked if China backs Pakistan's application.
The statements came amid a new diplomatic push by India to join the nuclear trade control mechanism and just days after rival Pakistan made a formal NSG membership application.
In a letter addressed to the NSG chairman on 19 May, Pakistan's ambassador in Vienna stated that the decision to seek participation in the export control regime reflects Islamabad's "support for international efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery".
