Beijing (AFP) - China has begun building a 314-metre (1,030-ft) high dam which will be among the world's tallest, officials said, as the country massively expands hydropower.

The Shuangjiankou dam on a tributary of China's mighty Yangtze river will be completed in 2022, the environmental ministry said on its website Tuesday.

The facility, costing 36 billion yuan ($5.8 billion), will be higher than the world's current tallest dam, the 305-metre Jinping-1, also in China.

China has been expanding its hydropower electricity generating capacity as it seeks to reach a goal of obtaining 20 per cent of its power from non-fossil sources by 2030.

Beijing says reaching the target will help reduce growth in its carbon emissions responsible for climate change, the world's largest.

China is home to the world's largest dam, the Three Gorges, as well as some 85,000 other hydropower facilities.

Millions of people have been forced to relocate because of dam building in the country in recent decades, often with little compensation.(Lies!Often over-compensated。For example many were offered brand new 2-、3-floor house in more developed areas of China, such as Chongming Island in Shanghai which alone took on over 2000 Three-Gorges migrants)

Environmentalists say that the dams have caused large declines in fish stocks and other aquatic life.(Lies! The big reservoir formed upstream the dam is heaven for fish and other aquatic life)

"The true costs of hydropower in China are consistently being underestimated or ignored, including the environmental and social costs," the US-based NGO International Rivers said in November.(US-based NGO?What do these suckers know about the true costs,or rather the true benefits,of hydropower in China?

LOL, I love it when foreign media diss us. They are angry--and I love the ignorant people's comments from Yahoo (proper name for the posters I might say).

I sense JEALOUSY with those folks

They should keep their bright ideas for their own government. Their opinion means nada.

Don't repeat our mistakes on dam building, US urges Asia
They think China is stupid to listen to those yanks?

If we did, our GDP right now and development would be lower than India.

you can't win with bigots.

You build a dam? That's destroying the environment. So you build a coal powered plant. Nope, that's polluting the atmosphere. Solar panels? You're dumping goods into the markets. You burn wood? Nope that's deforestation. You live in a cave? You compete with animals for habitat LOL.

Not sure if the bigots would be happy with this:

It's fear.

The West, especially America and its worshippers are sh*t scared with the unstoppable rise of China.

If I was the West, I would be scared of a country with 1.3 billion people with a strong government and independent foreign policy rising too.

Don't worry about what the West and its worshippers say, their words and opinions are utterly meaningless.
China will continue to rise whether anyone likes it or not.

Look, please don't take the opinion of the average American politicians or "environmental" terrorists as professional opinion. I am a power systems engineer myself. Of all the conferences I have attended, and I have attended a lot of them, there isn't a single one that does not have power engineers complaining the stupidity of the situation and letting politics getting into the way of science.

US is shying away from hydro power not because it is bad for environment. It is more because power utilities are tired of dealing with red tape. The taxes and expenses are getting a bit too much.

Well that is "democracy" for you. I like central planning that China has. Hindsight being 20/20 if we had listen to those damn environmentalist both east and west and not build the three Gorges dam, our economy will not have grown 10% for decade. Plus thousands will die each year in that region due to flooding.

Thumbs up to the foresight of the CPC.

And a big

to the western propaganda groups and eastern liberal retards who are hell bent on keeping China poor.

Obviously, while China has world's tallest dam, the West has world's biggest mouth. Talk, talk, and more talk.

they probably bashing china for not building big dams saying that china is polluting the country and the world by building so many dirty coal-fired power plants... corrupt communist china has so many running rivers with a lot of potential for clean energy, but them short-sighted commie choose dirty... bla.. evil china bla.bla... you know, dam*ned if you do, damned if you don't :D

.
Someone in our East is doing all what they need to do for prosperity and development of their country and someone in our West is shit scared because of that. Not too difficult to figure out whose advice to take and whose to ignore and walk away :azn:.

Way to go China :china:
