Had the Americans acted before back in lets say the 90's, would the Chinese been able to make that kind of stand on the South China Sea issue? That was what I meant by outwit. The Americans did too little too late. It is hard to see how the Indians fit here.

The only reason that parties of interest are bitching over the SCS issue right now is in part due to South East Asia being where much of the economic action will be today and tomorrow. The affected nations would of-course have their own nationalist stance and patriotism on the matter (a very low-key factor). Those routes are important for trade as well. Now that is where the Indians may fit.

Keeping the economic activity, climate, population, demographics and trade factors into account, it would have otherwise been some dispute that no one would care about.

Money rules more than petty border disputes and the politics surrounding them.
