China asks Pakistan to hand over Uighur terrorists

Chinese authorities have asked Pakistan to hand over members of the extremist East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) believed to be operating out of the country, naming six terror suspects in a list issued on Friday that described the group as the "most direct and real safety threat that China faces".

The six men were “core members” of the ETIM, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement. They were identified as Nurmemet Memetmin, Abdulkyum Kurban, Paruh Tursun, Tursunjan Ebibla, Nurmemet Raxit and Mamat Imin Nurmamat – all Uighurs, the ethnic Turkic Muslim minority from China’s far-western Xinjiang region which borders ***************** Kashmir (***).

While the ministry's statement stopped short of stating directly their links to terror camps in Pakistan – it only mentioned "a South Asian country” – a separate statement from the Chinese government issued last year identified Mr. Memetmin as having trained terrorists in Pakistan to carry out attacks in the city of Kashgar that left at least 20 people dead.

Mr. Nurmamat was also believed to be in Pakistan, according to Chinese analysts. The Ministry of Public Security said he had fled China after an explosion triggered accidentally at a bomb-making terror unit in Shache, Xinjiang that was plotting an attack in October 2009.

The statement named Mr. Memetmin as one of the founders of the ETIM when it was set up in 1997. It said he had dispatched another ETIM member, Memtieli Tiliwaldi, to China in 2007. Mr. Tiliwaldi was named by the Xinjiang regional government last year as being behind bombings and knife-attacks in Kashgar in July that left at least 20 people killed.

That the statement named several alleged ETIM members known to be in Pakistan underscored rising Chinese concerns over Pakistani authorities failing to effectively clamp down on the spread of terror across the border into Xinjiang. These concerns have been reflected in several public statements issued following the Kashgar violence that have unusually pointed the finger at an “all-weather ally”.

The Ministry of Public Security said it hoped that “foreign governments and their law enforcing departments would help to arrest the six and hand them over to Chinese authorities”, adding that it had decided to freeze their funds and assets.

Pakistani officials have said they have taken steps to crack down on the ETIM. Major General Athar Abbas, the Inter Services Public Relations Director General, said following last year’s attack in Kashgar that the Pakistani Army would continue operations against the organisations. He also pointed out the successes of its operations, such as the killing of ETIM leaders Hasan Mahsum in 2003 and Miamaitming Maimaili, also known as Abdul Haq al Turkistani, in February 2011.

Last month, following violence in Yecheng, near Kashgar, that left at least 20 people killed, Xinjiang Governor Nur Bekri said that those behind recent incidents had “a thousand and one links” to terrorists in neighbouring Pakistan. He did, however, add that “violent activities by individual terrorists” would not affect bilateral ties.

Critics of Mr. Bekri and some Uighur scholars such as economist Ilham Tohti have, however, accused the government of exaggerating the terror threat by describing all incidents of ethnic unrest in Xinjiang as "separatist activities" to justify harsh crackdowns. Riots in Urumqi between Uighurs and majority Han Chinese that left at least 197 people killed in July 2009 were also blamed by the government on terrorists, although they were seen by some scholars as reflecting deep-rooted ethnic tensions triggered by resentment towards increasing Han migration.

well then hand him over...what about it?

taste of what medicine? When identified, they were handed over in the past......when requested, Pakistan sent delegations to reason with the rebels (on two or three different occasions i believe) and it worked.

desperation knows no bounds; the indians on this forum demonstrate that fact

I think Pakistan should first ask for proof from China that terrorist are pakistanis, then China will submit 1000-2000 page evidence to Pakistan. Then Pakistan should demand actionable concrete proof and let the terrorist go wild. (This is what happens with India)

I think China and India should team up and destroy those terrorist camps with help of Pakistan government.

if you (self-edited) knew to read before going off on bandwagons, perhaps you'd have noted what was said quite clearly in the 2nd paragraph:

These so called terrorists are believed to be in Pakistan, said by chinese, this only implied that there are chinese people in pakistan no idea from which side, people should not be surprised to see them there.

Oh Rly? That's hard evidence enough? Will that stand in Pakistani courts? Enough to convict the 'criminals'?
Funny that when US or Interpol or even India hand over evidence in dossiers, thats not enough evidence to even arrest any individual, but if China simply says so, then yes!! Bend over Backwards as far as one can go!!

THAT there is your identity.

Uighar terrorist are no friends of Pakistan and they are friends with the enemies of Pakistan known as Pakistan Taliban who incidentitally are friends with India. So you see how when you flick the light switch on the light bulb lights up in India.

Every time we can get hold of these Uighur terrorist, they will be handed over to our Chinese Brothers.

majority of those Uighur suspects are not even having business to be in Pakistan...they are there illegally

believe me -- if i could push a magic red button and that would remove all illegal aliens from Pakistan -- whether they be Uighurs, Tajiks, Afghans, Uzbeks (especially!), Chechens, Arabs etc. who are in Pakistan for nefarious activity belieeeeeeve me I would have pressed that button hard a long time ago. The anti-soviet jihad is long over and i've never been comfortable about some of these people living freely and settling in Pakistan.

we've killed many of them who tried picking a fight with our security forces; many deported....some still existing here and there

PRC is our neighbour and an ally.....dont ya think it would only be natural that we wouldnt want our territory to be used against them? The same way we would expect that land of PRC be never used against Pakistan - which we're confident it never would be.

p.s. indian dossiers were abstract prose; they werent evidence....

They are still Muslims. How can you abandon your fellow people just because of a non-Islamic nation?

theyre Chinese citizens who are Muslims, they arent ''my people''

at a Mosque, i'll pray side by side with them; during iftar, i'll break bread with them. But at the end of the day, not my people.

it means same thing is applied to indian muslims too ;)

i smell hypocrisy here :P

I have absolutely no sympathy for the Uighars terrorist. They need to obey the laws of their country. They are not welcome in Pakistan unless they are patriotic Chinese citizens and come officially with valid visas.

By the way, not all Uighars are terrorist. Large majority of Uighar population support their Chinese homeland and reap the benefits of robust Chinese Economy.

find me a post where i said theyre ''my people''

same logic applies:

at a Mosque, i'll pray side by side with them; during iftar, i'll break bread with them. But at the end of the day, not my people.

i do however consider Kashmiris on both sides of the LoC to be one and the same as Pakistanis; one reason why we will continue to support and push for their freedom unequivocally - and i know that's where you were going to next take this conversation! ;)

The only Hypocrisy is in your feeble brain.

Pakistan has never claimed Indian Muslims as our people and Indian Muslims have never claimed Pakistan as their country. Kashmir is different story because of its DISPUTED status.
