China a step closer to microchip independence

Despite spending billions on its domestic industry, China remains reliant on foreign chipmakers.

China will spend over $300 billion on importing semiconductors this year, an industry expert told the World Semiconductor Conference in Nanjing on Wednesday, as the U.S. continues to put pressure on the country’s access to the most advanced chips.

“China is the world’s largest importer of chips,” Wei Shaojun, vice chairman of the China Semiconductor Industry Association, said on Wednesday. China imported $301 billion worth of semiconductors last year—more than the $238 billion it spent on crude oil.

China will spend over $300B in 2020 on imported chips. China is nowhere close to breaking its dependence on foreign semiconductor technology. By the time China can mass produce a 7nm process, its competitors will have moved on.

Not to mention nearly all of China’s supercomputers are running on American technology.

Last year China import chip $301, this year $300.

So in what way China is more reliant on import chip in this 2020?

I guess hollow vessels make the most nose...keep waffling

China target for self sufficiency in domestic chips production is only 75% by 2025. So don't expects any miracles. The demands in China keeps on rising exponentially esp. with the roll out of 5G coverage in China.

What China has achieved is already a miracle. Within so short a period more than 1780 chip designer companies have emerged compared wifh 780 2or 3 years ago.

Far more important news is China is in fact leaping into 4th generation semiconductors R&D but due to Trump disruptive actions has to invests in some 3rd Generation to keep their IC productions intact.

But they have major success in the production of its proprietary Lingxin 01 smart driving automotive chips, IGBT and FPGA.
China has successfully produced its first photonic chip.
In other word all the exciteness with the miniaturisation of these 3rd generation 5nm 3nm by TSMC do not affects China mainstream industrial chips production.
