Washington: The US today said that it is not trying to "hold China down", despite crucial differences over issues like supplying arms to Taiwan and was trying to "manage" differences with the "global power".

Defence Secretary Robert Gates expressed his satisfaction over the level of relationship between Washington and Beijing.

"We are not trying to hold China down. China has been a great power for thousands of years. It is a global power and will be a global power," Gates told reporters travelling with him enroute to Singapore, according to a transcripts provided by the Department of Defense.

"So the question is, how we work our way through this in a way that assures that we continue to have positive relations in areas like economics and other areas that are important to both of us and manage whatever differences of view we have in the other areas?" he said.

The US is very satisfied with the progress of the relationship. "My first visit to China in this job was in the fall of 2007. I laid out a fairly ambitious agenda for developing our military-to-military relationship," he said.

We've obviously hit snags and obstacles along the way, but I think we're in a pretty good place now, pretty realistic," he said.

If anything, what all of this has sort of suggested to me is we need more of what is almost always in short supply when it comes to the United States and its government, and that is patience, that these relationships take time to develop, Gates said.

China a global power US

it's another G2 rule the world campaign, and china certainly don't buy this offer.

G2 rule the world means, everything following the orders status quo, which benefit the US more than China.

absolutely..The phrase "Global power" is meaningless for China when its influence is only in countries like North Korea,Sudan,Zimbabwe and off course Pakistan.

Your forgot Myanmar, Iran, and Venezuela. Angola probably belongs on this list too.

Speaking the Truth is NOT flaming.

Already reports are coming that Many africans see China as the new occupational power. Some are also of the extreme view that Chinese are treating the Africans worse than how the europeans treated them.

Asians already knew this about China.Looks like Africans are also seeing this. China truly going GLOBAL :agree:

LOL, look around you in every direction. Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan... all turning to China, instead of India.

Anyway, this is a moot point. China sits on all the global high tables, with the 2nd largest economy, and UNSC veto power.

Check out the list of "great powers", India is not on it. :azn: India's great claim, is having more people in poverty than Africa, and starving millions of their own people to death every year.

How long will it take for these neighbors of ours to see the truth about China? when their economies are being eaten by China like moth eats clothes.

Atleast we are working on our poverty problem. We are not looting resources of Africans and making them poor..
We are not talking about India's poor but about China's foreign policy. But it is atypical Chinese behavior to divert attention from the main point when they have no points to argue..

All countries have to help themselves and not rely too much on others, so long as the government structure and corruption is rift someone will always find a way to take advantage of that. Do you really think European and US consumers care about the welfare of Chinese workers making their Ipads or Nike shoes.

Regardless China is really a global economic power, these days one small bad news from China sends the stock markets ticking. Previously it was only the US who had that influence.

You really should stop with your anti-China propaganda. China pays for every African resource that it purchases. Any country can choose not to sell to China if they so desire.

China to forgive half of Africa rail debt

Chinese Vice-Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan signed an agreement with counterparts from Zambia and Tanzania in Lusaka, Zambia's capital, on Jan 19, to forgive 50% of the debt from China to build and operate the Tanzania-Zambia railway.

The Chinese government took the action because of the traditional friendship between China and Africa, and Chinese people want to do their best to support African people's development, said Zhong at the signing ceremony. He also said the Chinese government hopes the railway will operate with less debt and boost the regional economy and benefit the two countries.

China helped construct the Tanzania-Zambia railway at the request of the leadership of Tanzania and Zambia in 1970, and handed it over after its completion in 1976. The Chinese government provided an interest-free loan of 988 million yuan to complete the project, and continued to provide such loans and technicians to ensure its operation.

[The 1,860-km railway, which took over 50,000 technicians and workers seven years to complete in 1975 and was handed over to Zambia and Tanzania in 1976, was one of China's largest foreign aid projects and is considered as the emblem of China-Africa friendship.]"

"Africans welcome China's growing economic power

LONDON, March 27 (Reuters) - The prospect of growing Chinese economic clout is welcomed in all African countries, in contrast to other parts of the world where attitudes are either negative or divided, a poll showed on Sunday.

Asked how they view the possibility of an economically far stronger China, around four in five Nigerians and Kenyans said they looked forward to such an outcome, according to the survey of more than 28,000 people in 27 countries commissioned by the BBC World Service.

"All African countries view China's increasing economic power positively," the survey report said.

Sub-Saharan Africa was also home to the very few countries worldwide where most people would be happy about China boosting its military might.

China is investing large amounts of money and technical expertise in African countries, seeking a reliable source of raw materials to sustain its economic growth.

Globally, half of all respondents favoured the prospect of a wealthier China and only a third believed it would be unwelcome. The split was little changed from the previous poll in 2005.

However, in North America, the majority would view such a development warily, and more so than six years ago.

Unfavourable views of China's economic influence rose in neighbouring Japan, South Korea and Russia.

Overall, people expected China will be a more important economic partner to their respective countries than the United States or the European Union in 10 years.

Interviews were conducted between December and February. (Reporting by Olesya Dmitracova)"
