ISLAMABAD, June 14, 2010 (AFP) - The US general commanding NATO troops in Afghanistan held talks with Pakistan's army chief on Monday, a day after claims emerged that Pakistani spies fund, train and host the Taliban.

Stanley McChrystal makes frequent visits to Pakistan and holds regular talks with Pakistan's army chief General Ashfaq Kayani in an effort to streamline the fight against Islamist insurgents on both sides of the border.

Speaking in Brussels last week, McChrystal warned that a major campaign to win back control of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan would be slower than expected because Afghan forces are in short supply and the local populace wary.

The US embassy in Islamabad said McChrystal travelled to Pakistan to "provide an update" on International Security Assistance Force operations in Afghanistan and to consult Kayani.

The visit comes after Pakistan dimissed a study for the London School of Economics accusing its ISI of providing funding, training and sanctuary to the Taliban in Afghanistan on a scale far greater than previously believed.

"It is a part of a malicious campaign," Pakistani army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told AFP on Sunday, questioning the credibility of what Islamabad has called a "one-sided" report.
Pakistan lashed out at allegations that President Asif Ali Zardari assured captive senior Taliban leaders that they were "our people" and had his backing, apparently authorising some to be released from prison.

Presidential spokeswoman Farahnaz Ispahani said the "wild accusations" were based on "one-sided sources" and that researcher Matt Waldman should have conducted interviews in Pakistan to balance the report.

Inter-Services Intelligence has played a key political role in Pakistan, which has spent more than half of its 63 years under military rule, and there have long been suspicions about its role in neighbouring Afghanistan.

McChrystal last visited Islamabad on May 21.

Pak to be taken into confidence on any new operation in Afghanistan: McChrystal

General Stanley A. McChrystal, Commander International Security Assistance Forces, Afghanistan called on Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani at GHQ on Monday.

The visiting dignitary remained with him for some time and discussed matters of professional interest.

According to military spokesman, both the high ups discussed host of issues relating to security situation, regional situation, operation against militants, massive operation against Taliban in Kandahar, Pak-Afghan security issues etc.

During the course of the meeting, both the high ups urged the need for military cooperation to be strengthened between Pakistan and NATO besides safe and smooth passage of transportation of goods.

General Stanley A. McChrystal, Commander International Security Assistance Forces, Afghanistan said that Pakistan will be taken into confidence on any new operation in Afghanistan.

He further told the Army Chief that the main aim of his frequent visits to Pakistan is meant for enhancing military cooperation and process of joint consultation, military spokesman concluded.

ISLAMABAD: June 15(APP): Chief of the Army Staff, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, called on Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani at PM’s House here this afternoon and discussed the overall security situation of the country.

The COAS also apprised the Prime Minister of his forthcoming visit to China starting from 17th of this month.

During his visit, the COAS is scheduled to meet senior military leadership of PLA and some Government officials. He will discuss issues related to Pak-China defence cooperation and measures to further strengthen the bonds between the two Armed Forces as well as the Nations.

Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, on Wednesday, embarked on a five-day official visit to China to discuss bilateral defence cooperation and to enhance ties between the armies of the two countries.

Kayani is visiting China at the special invitation of the People's Liberation Army. He will meet the senior military leadership of the PLA and government officials during the visit, the Inter-Services Public Relations said.

He will discuss issues related to Pakistan-China defence cooperation and measures to further enhance ties between the armies of two countries. Lt Gen Khalid Shameem Wynne, Chief of General Staff, and other senior military officials saw Kayani off at the airport.

Pakistan army chief embarks on China visit

Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Wednesday left for China on a 5-day official visit, the army said.

He is visiting China at the special invitation of Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), an army statement said.

During the visit, he will meet senior military leadership of the PLA and government officials, said the statement from the army ’s Inter-Services Public Relations.

He will discuss issues related to Pakistan-China defence cooperation and measures to further enhance ties between the armies of the two countries, it said.

Lt Gen Khalid Shameem Wnne, Chief of Gen. Staff and other senior military officials and acting Chinese ambassador saw him off at the Islamabad airport.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan pledged to strengthen defense ties Thursday at a meeting between Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

"Cooperation between the Chinese and Pakistani armed forces is exemplary and has been fruitful," Liang, also a state councilor, said during the meeting at the Diaoyutai Guest House Thursday morning.

Liang said the two sides should make continuous efforts to conduct their cooperation programs well.

He said China would join hands with Pakistan to bring military relations to a new high.

Kayani said Pakistan values its defense and security cooperation with China, noting that the two countries have cooperated fruitfully in national defense industries in recent years.

He added Pakistan would further strengthen exchange and cooperation with China.

Kayani will also meet with Chinese State Councilor and Minister for Public Security Meng Jianzhu, top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo, and Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong later Thursday.

BEIJING, June 17 (APP): Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo said here Thursday that his country would work with Pakistan to promote a strategic cooperative partnership between the two neighbors.

“We should work together to deepen bilateral cooperation in defense security and other sectors,” Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), said when meeting with Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, reports Xinhua news agency.

Hailing the good-neighborly friendship between the two nations, Wu said the bilateral all-weather friendship and all-round cooperation accorded with the fundamental interests of the two peoples and played an important role in safeguarding regional peace and promoting common development.

Wu also spoke highly of the fruitful exchanges and cooperation between the two armed forces, saying that the joint anti-terrorist cooperation in combatting the “East Turkistan Islamic Movement,” a terrorist group, indicated that China-Pakistan relations were strategically on track.

Speaking on the occasion General Kayani said Pakistan was ready to seek stronger relationship with China.

Pakistan Ambassador to China Masood Khan was also present on the occasion.

General Kayani is here on a 5-day official visit.

During a meeting with Guo Boxiong, the senior officer of the People's Liberation Army of China stressed the importance of strategic communication between China and Pakistan.

Guo said the all-weather friendship between the two countries has endured major international challenges. Facing the changing international and regional security situation, the two sides should strengthen strategic communication, deepen substantial cooperation and make positive contributions to regional peace and prosperity.

Kayani said Pakistan valued and was proud of its traditional friendship with China.
