Chattogram, known as the second capital of the country, is witnessing massive development work that will change its past history.
In the meantime, the city is witnessing some development work while some is in the pipeline.
The city which was once troubled with many civic problems is now turning better as the authority has massive infrastructure development to implement.
At present the government is starting work on an elevated expressway from WASA circle to airport. Circles concerned are very optimistic that vehicles will run on the elevated expressway by 2021.
On the other hand, to relieve the city from water logging, the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bangladesh Army to implement a Tk 5500 crore mega project including resolving water logging.
City experts say, already some of ongoing projects including flyover construction are about to be completed. But despite thousand of crores in development works, water logging is destroying all the fame of the commercial city.
But the city will advance fifty years ahead once these mega projects are completed in the next five years. All these work are now the demand of time, they added.
Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said, to safeguard the city from water logging, under this Tk 5500 crore mega project, there will be construction of new switch gate, canal excavation and installation of big pumps to reduce water logging. Soon the city dwellers will get relief from water logging.
Another mega project of the present government in the port city is ‘Karnaphuli Tunnel’ which is also about to start. This tunnel will make communication to Cox’s Bazar from the city easier. This will modernize the city.
The government is very much hopeful that in the next five years, Taka 1 trillion investment will be made in the southern side of Chattogram, which extends from the Karnaphuli’s southern bank to Cox’s Bazar.
To maintain this huge investment, airport, elevated expressway and Chattogram WASA will play an important role.
A 28.5 kilometer long flyover will reduce the traffic congestion of the EPZ and KEPZ and will also play a vital role for smooth movement of traffic in the city.
According to CDA, this four-lane flyover is 60 feet wide, and is to cost Tk 3251 crore, to be implemented by 2020.
A city outer ring road from Patenga Sea Beach to Faujdarhat is already 75 percent completed. The ring road is 17 kilometers long and 33 feet high. The government and JICA are jointly financing the project.
CDA chairman said, work on the outer ring road is at the last stage of completion. Bakalia access road work is also about to be completed. Once the road is complete it will reduce distance to 1.5 kilometers from 8 kilometers.
Once the expressway is complete, people will be able to move from Bahaddarhat to airport through the flyover- he added.
