What's new

Chattogram Port 64th among world’s top 100 busiest container ports

Yeah good luck when IMF prediction gets revised. Also IMF predicts higher that 4% anyway. Also no one actually looks at those, GDP growth predictions aren't even worth looking at if it goes beyond a year or two max. Too many factors that can't be calculated.
Sri Lanka's Businesses Confidence is currently at an all time low.
https://www.cbsl.gov.lk/en/statistics/business-surveys/business-outlook-survey

This will come to end when the Political Crisis ends with the Elections. IMF simply cannot factor this in so the so-called prediction is pointless as its based on the current state which is a country in political crisis.

We are opening three Expressways this year alone and that is going to boost development.
https://srilankamirror.com/news/new...ess-ways-to-be-vested-with-the-public-shortly

The Southern Expressway boosted the development of Galle and now we are seeing high rises coming up in what was a small town a few decades ago.

Land reclamation of the Port City is over and Construction work is about to begin

Combine all of that with the end of the political crisis Sri Lanka can easily go past 5% growth
Wow that looks nice, the Port of Colombo, if realized, reminds me of Singapore. Much a developed country.
How is the security situation now in SL?

.
No. See actual growth data from IMF:

This is not a short-term problem but it is what Sinhalese are as a people - a 'middle-income' capability ethnicity.

Your growth before 2013 was due to taken out loans like a drunken sailor.

I am not trying to pit down Sri Lanka as you are better than all other S Asian countries(BD only because it gained independence in 1971 and was rinsed for 24 years before that by Pakistan) but please accept you are no better than Thais and behind Malays in economic potential.

LOL Nope. Most of Sri Lanka has barely reached a quarter of their potential.
Sri Lanka is able to repay the loans and loans are taken for projects which will bring returns. Sri Lanka has adequate revenue to deal with the loans.

The idea behind the Central Expressway is to boost development of the interior and it will eventually be expanded to the East

There is also the proposed Ruwanpura Expressway

Dude, I am not interested in opinions but actual raw numbers.

So Sri Lanka will get back to pre-2013 growth just by building some infrastructure?

Can I have what you are smoking?:smokin:

Yes we are going to obviously (duh) If you can't get the basic idea that connectivity promotes growth then you are really lacking in common sense.

Also Sri Lanka is improving connectivity with India by upgrading the Palaly Airport to allow short haul flights between India and Northern Province as well as developing the KKS port to handle Cargo ships

Agree that connectivity promotes growth but it is not going to be anywhere near as much as you think

IMF has already factored this in as it thinks growth will rise to 4-5% a year in 5 years from 3-4% now.
The fundamentals of being stuck in "middle-income trap" remains.

BD has increased growth from 6-7% a year to 8-9% a year by building infrastructure from a very low base. Sri Lanka cannot increased growth as much as BD since it comes from a much higher base.

Look dude, I have nothing against Sri Lankans but please understand that you are not going to be another Malaysia, let alone Singapore. Malaysia grows 6% a year compared to your 3-4% and they are twice as rich as you.

I dont know why you keep dragging your feet in to mud lol...and what if sri lanka does become Singapore they dont have any problem with bd. Our main problem is Myanmar and India. Not any other south asian countries. I will love to see Lanka and pak grow fast economically.

And do you have ANY economic knowledge to contribute as you started this by comparing Sri Lanka to Singapore! LOL.

.
Sri Lanka can't compete with BD growth, it is a fact... I believe BD going to join 1Trillion $ economy within short span... India and Sri lanka need ti work hard to compete BD growth... BD strategically located submerging country... I see a rapid growth in their infra and gonna have busiest Ports...

Actually the IMF does not factor in a lot of things and they pretty much always miss the mark because long term speculation of GDP growth is simply impossible.
Sri Lanka is not going to get stuck in the middle income trap.

It's not infra-construction alone that matters. It's time to get industrial activities in other areas of Sri Lanka running.
North and East of Sri Lanka are still barely at a fraction of what they used to be. The Northern province is now starting to see FDI flowing in
http://www.colombopage.com/archive_18B/Sep03_1535982090CH.php

Sri Lanka's Western Province is already seeing heavy investment in Nanotech and ICT. Sri Lanka's SLINTEC went from a lab in the basement of a garment factory to a massive Nanotech Park in less than a decade
Hell it was so successful it keeps on expanding

Multiple IT parks are rising in Colombo and Orion City was so successful they started the Orion Towers to build high-rises due to high demand.

The Western Province coming to the level of Singapore is inevitable.
What Sri Lankan Government is doing by madly building expressways is to send other provinces to the same level and it has been successful.
Extending the Southern Expressway is not about the Hambantota Port alone. The region has massive potential in Tourism and Shangri-La already have a massive resort there.

Hambantota is close to Sri Lanka's remaining pocket of poverty outside the North and East.
sri-lka-pocketsofseverepoverty.jpg

The Expressway network reaches Sri Lanka's least developed regions and promote rapid economic growth in those regions. Hambantota was costly and there were mistakes because the Rajapaksas wanted it to develop it faster than Sri Lanka could handle. But the fact is it is going to succeed and is already making rapid progress. Ship arrivals are increasing and more investors are lining up.

Develop cities with connectivity to the outside world and then connect them to other areas of Sri Lanka. Its going to take a few decades but Sri Lanka is certainly going to avoid the Middle income trap

This is just talk.

Since 2013, Sri Lanka has been growing at 4% average a year.

Tell me one other middle-income country that has done this for the best part of a decade and still become high income. Just a single example will do please.

What is "just talk"? You are humiliating yourself by trying to dismiss Sri Lankans long-term development plan which I showed you is going well "just talk".

The Southern Expressway extension to Hambantota is going to be Completed this year or January next year. Is that "Just Talk"?

The Port City reclamation is completed and CIFC is about to begin construction.

The Expansion of the Nanotechnology Park. Is already underway

All the Expressway constructions are ongoing well.

Everything is going well, even a little kid can see how Sri Lanka is building new cities open to the world in all four corners and connecting them to the interior in order to boost economic development.

There are examples for this like Singapore but as Sri Lanka has higher land area and a more spread out population it needs to develop multiple large cities on different sides and connect them.

Yes it is talk as GDP growth has not shown to be boosted on a long-term basis.

Plenty of countries have done what Sri Lanka is and plans to do and not succeeded.

Now name me ONE example and you will have won the argument.

Buddy, this discussion is futile.

Simply put, its hard to argue level 3 and level 4+ stuff when someone is stuck in level 1 perspective (having just come in from level 0) and thinking some low-base effect (from pure export of just one kind of thing) is some big deal and just compounds forever (and that too over-reliant on their own internal liquidity claims).

It's a classic frog in well situation....they have not come across what economic diversity means, or 3rd party world standards....and why that's important and they do terribly when they actually are confronted with it....so they just prefer to have some silly uneducated response that makes them feel better.

In the end just work on the apex stuff you got going and let the results bear out.

I have already named Singapore as an example
Sri Lanka has maintained high GDP growth since the war ended. The only thing you are doing is ranting about a drop in 2013 even though it quickly went upwards again. Hell the only thing you end up showing is that the Sri Lankan economy has shown to be resilient enough to maintain growth even with the multiple floods and droughts hitting in quick succession combined with a constitutional crisis and a major terror attack all the while carrying out fiscal reforms to increase revenue. Add the fact that Sri Lanka gives full free education and free healthcare at the same time only makes the Sri Lankan economy look better.

Well the only thing he ends up accomplishing is making SL look better, regardless of what he intends

Do you see that your economy since 2013 is crushed and now running at less than 4% a year average.
Malaysians are 2.5x as rich as you guys and they are growing faster.

Sorry but your country is in the "middle-income trap".

PS - Stop making excuses as regards the floods, terror attacks etc as other countries have it just as bad and they still manage to grow through these episodes.
