Amid fallout from the decision to allow Xi to be president for life, censors also crack down on letters, phrases and George Orwell’s Animal Farm

It is the 14th letter in the English alphabet and, in Scrabble, the springboard for more than 600 8-letter words.

But for the Communist party of China it is also a subversive and intolerable character that was this week banished from the internet as Chinese censors battled to silence criticism of Xi Jinping’s bid to set himself up as ruler for life.

The contravening consonant was perhaps the most unusual victim of a crackdown targeting words, phrases and even solitary letters censors feared might be used to attack Beijing’s controversial decision to abolish constitutional term limits for China’s president.

The Communist party has painted the move - which experts say paves the way for Xi to become a dictator for life - as an expression of overwhelming popular support for China’s strongman leader. However, there has been widespread online push-back in China since it was announced on Sunday on the eve of an annual political congress in Beijing.

In a blog post, Victor Mair, a University of Pennsylvania China expert, said censors had taken “quick, drastic action” after “the internet was flooded with complaints”.

According to a list compiled by the China Digital Times website, search terms blocked on Weibo, China’s Twitter, included:

- ‘Ten thousand years’ (万岁), which is China’s way of saying: ‘Long live!’ or ‘Viva!’

- ‘Disagree’ (不同意)

- ‘Xi Zedong’ (习泽东) - a hybrid of the names of Xi and Chairman Mao Zedong

- ‘Shameless’ (不要脸)

- ‘Lifelong’ (终身)

-‘Personality cult’ (个人崇拜)

-‘Emigrate (移民)

- ‘Immortality’ (长生不老)

The name Yuan Shikai, a Qing dynasty warlord who unsuccessfully tried to restore monarch to China, was also banned as were the titles of two George Orwell books, 1984 and Animal Farm.

Less clear is why censors took issue with the letter ‘N’. Mair speculated it was “probably out of fear on the part of the government that ‘N’ = ‘n terms in office’, where possibly n > 2”.

Charlie Smith, the alias of the co-founder of GreatFire.org, a group which helps users track and bypass Chinese censorship, said he found that explanation plausible.

“[Censors] probably determined it was sensitive and then moved to add that content to the blacklist so others would not be able to post something similar,” he said, noting that the seditious symbol had now been emancipated.

“I doubt that they actually put that much thought into it so sadly, the letter ‘N’ was a temporary victim of this rash decision.”

On Wednesday, Beijing accused the west of reacting “hysterically” to the scrapping of presidential term limits.

“No sooner had [the party] made public its proposal … than the Western media began bad-mouthing China in their usual and various ways,” the party-run Global Times tabloid said in an editorial.

“It is worth noting that for some time the Western media have been growing strident in their abuse of Beijing, almost using curse words,” the newspaper added, claiming those behind the criticism hoped to see “China crumble”.

Smith said he believed Beijing had underestimated the outrage its decision would cause. “The response from Chinese netizens indicates that Xi may have miscalculated how this would be received by the general public. Hence, he has asked the censors to put in overtime and things like the letter ‘N’ end up as collateral damage.”

For now, censors might feel they had the situation under control. “But if the momentum continues to build and netizens continue to look for other ways to express their displeasure with Xi, we could reach a critical point where the authorities might have to consider ‘turning off’ the internet, however they might do that,” Smith added.

“Now, more than any other time in recent history, those who are in a position to help Chinese netizens freely express their opinions and freely access information should step up and lend a hand.”

Can Chinese here confirm or deny if the above censor list ? And did Letter N actually got censored?

I find it ironic that China wants to join the ranks of countries like Iraq, Syria and North Korea by legalizing lifetime dictatorship. Highly illogical move which will destroy china!
The problem is not of Xi Zedong. He may be a good leader. Problem is if a corrupt leader gets in, he can do much bigger damage.

If Xi stay longer is not good for Chinese, the West propaganda will be very happy :-). But this time it is opposite. smell something fishy from their mind. I think instead of propagating how bad this is going to be, Western propaganda should propose change US president term to make Trump stay more than 3-4 terms to counter China.:yahoo:

At this moment, The political situation is really difficult and people's feeling is really mixed.
One hand, the fear of having another 'great' leader who, can't even get up on his own, refuse to let go the power.
on the other, Xi is the best leader since the founding of PRC, his extra term will guarantee China's superpower status by 2030...
As XI himself, He is absolutely aware the downside of getting ride of the term limit, it's a big issue for China. But the temptation to have CHina become a superpower and rich is great as well.
So, he made his choice, to gamble China's future. He got the gut to pick the gamble, I respect his decision.

You know, risk taking with skin in the game a sign of strength. Those who dare that should be respected. It all comes to one key point: in case of failure who gets the maximum downside. I think Xi Zedong and the royal family plus CPC leadership have their futures secured one way or the other. Many of them have their children living in HongKong away from any mess in Mainland China. Those who are not in this situation are rest of Chinese. And thats not great. If Xi Zedong were gambling his own future, I would have respect for him. He is gambling China's future with limited impact on himself.

Its like wall street. Bankers gambling on people's pension funds. If they win, they make huge bonus. If they fail, they will loose their job for the time being and perhaps that years bonus. But their older earnings are still intact. Yet the people's money who they gambled will be gone and government --ie people again-- will have to pay for their greed. Its all the same.

Well, China's action is reciprocal, and just asked why FDR had extended his presidential terms.

FDR didn't extend his term. Back then there were no limits explicitly stated in the US Constitution. It was simply an unwritten rule you'd step down after 2 four year terms. However legally as long as you won the general election every 4 years you could stay.

After FDR they changed the Constitution to enforce the 2 term rule (ie you can only be elected twice)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

1947
"The Twenty-second Amendment (Amendment XXII) of the United States Constitution limits the number of times one can be elected to the office of President of the United States"

"following George Washington's decision to retire after his second elected term, numerous public figures subsequently argued he had established a "two-term tradition" that served as a vital check against any one person, or the presidency as a whole, accumulating too much power"

You mean Xi is the only reason behind China's rapid economic growth? Without him, growth would collapse and China can't surpass the US economically?

Nice, Xi is way better than the past Chinese leaders, he is good not only for China and the Chinese people but also for the rest of the world. I hope he stay for a couple more terms.

The other is unknown, but his is guaranteed to surpass.
XI is not the only reason behind China's rapid economic growth. But XI is the only person so far keep economic not to collapse and reform in a right way.
If you ever live under the age before XI, you will know that corruption in China is at a breaking point. The officials, in every level, have unlimited power and corrupted in every possible way and getting worse. But Xi stopped it, He made a anti-corruption so different, that every Chinese can see and feel.

Personally, I know a member amount those officials.
Before XI is in power, he had his personal driver with an AudiA6, big office, all life bill free, work his own hour, receive 'gifts' every holiday, and eat/drink the expensive stuff every night.
After XI in power,
First year, he lost his driver and car. The office become a tinny room.
Second year, straight working hour and no more free bill. no more 'gifts'.
Third year, completely crack down on free dinner and drinking.
Last year, no more drinking even you pay yourself after work.

This is only his achievement in anti-corruption.
He also doing really good in
  • Economy reform and tech upgrade
  • OBOR
  • Military reform and built.
  • Enforce rule of law
  • Clean envirnment
  • ...
All of them need time to complete.

He is gambling his own future, at least his reputation. He has the highest reputation amount all Chinese leader at this moment.
CPC leadership have their children living in HongKong away? royal family?
What your take Xi's anti-corruption as? Modi's currency ban?
Xi purge that shit completely during his first year! There was official government document to all officials in every level! Recall their kis/family's any kind of PR card in 6 month or it will be endpoint of their political career! No more promotion and change official title.

I don't doubt that China has made a huge improvement under his rule. But is he the only reason for the improvement? There are no other competent and moral leaders in the CPC? Is there a need to tighten censorship so much from Hu's time even though the educated middle-class in China is now much larger?

Changing the constitution needs to take a hundred year long view. What you're thinking of is a short term gain, but a long term risk. Even Putin dare not change the constitution to remain in power; he exploited the loopholes.

Doesn't Xi himself has siblings/relatives in Canada and Australia?

Censorship is in need. Even Facebook and Google already blocked fake news, this and censorship have the same nature, but paint enemy with "censorship" and paint oneself as "blocking fake news" :-). Internet is just a lots of garbage, propaganda from enemies...
