Despite flying since May 2017 and having six test aircraft, the C919 jetliner has not yet obtained type certification from the CAAC, Civil Aviation Administration of China.

Until the middle of the year, the plan was that the COMAC aircraft would be homologated at the end of 2021, opening the way for the beginning of revenue operation in the near future.

However, the Chinese regulatory authority confirmed last week that the C919 is not expected to complete its certification until 2022. The information was shared by CAAC chief executive Yang Zhenmei on Friday at an aviation forum in Shanghai.

Zhenmei revealed that the C919 prototypes made just 34 certification flights as of early December, when 276 takeoffs would be required.

Until then, it was expected that the first commercial jet would be delivered to OTT Airlines, a subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines, the only airline to sign a purchase agreement for the C919, with five aircraft.

In November, C919’s chief designer, Wu Guanhua, proposed that the program be given more funding and a larger workforce, as well as prioritizing testing to complete certification.

The C919 is the largest commercial aircraft ever developed in China, with a capacity similar to the Airbus A320, and the first to be completely designed in the country. COMAC also produces the ARJ21-700, a regional jet based on the former US MD-95.

Yikes, the C919 still needs over 200 takeoffs for certification?

At this rate this aircraft will be certified in 2030. By that time, it would be even more late/out of date than it is already. Granted its their first step in this industry, so it can be forgiven. But it seems they are not even half way through the certification process yet . Maybe They should just focus on wide body aircraft C929 they are supposed to build with the Russians.

Take those western report with a pinch of salt. It missed this year end certification and the most delay a few months to mid 2022 to certify.

As some mention, late job is better than botch job like the flying coffin B737 max which took only less than a year from start to cert. End up , it's a disaster job.

Dude, it's was said by your own CAAC chairman so it's not a western conspiracy theory. So I don't get your point.

Boeing 737 MAX's sales to China will be on hold until COMAC C919's progress is back to track. Airbus would be very happy, so is China's High Speed Train operators and manufacturer.

The competitor's teething is almost completed ... customers got more options and choices in the aviation market.

SHANGHAI:
China's homegrown C919 narrow-body jet, designed to challenge the Airbus-Boeing duopoly, is nearing certification as its test planes completed all of the test flight tasks, the company said on Saturday.
The state-owned manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC) said on its official social media account that the six test planes have finished the testing tasks as the programme enters the final stage of receiving a certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China which is required for commercial operations.
That would mark a milestone in China's ambitions to climb up the manufacturing supply chain. China's COMAC is now effectively the third option in the market for planes with more than 100 seats, after Boeing and Airbus struck deals to take over production of rival planes made by Embraer and Bombardier .
Designed to compete directly with the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus 320neo families, the C919 aircraft programme has faced a range of technical issues and tougher US export controls, after being launched in 2008, Reuters has reported.
The launch customer is the state-owned China Eastern Airlines , which has placed an order for five C919 jets in March last year. Changjiang Daily, a newspaper owned by the local government of Wuhan, said in a report on July 8 the airline is scheduled to take the first delivery in August.
Assembled in China, the plane relies heavily on Western components, including engines and avionics.

There is a long way to go before it can make an impact on the Airbus-Boeing cartel .. COMAC will have to earn it's place through time and the value add it brings to the table. Right now, it has no pedigree - if it is safe, reliable and cost-efficient, it may be able to earn its place on the table. Many other competitors have attempted to take on the Airbus-Boeing cartel and they all failed - and none of them had to deal with the toxicity that comes with being a Chinese brand/product that we now see in the world ....

Lets see.

.
For now it is an option, A one window sanction free option.

Plus the chinese push will make it widely used and deployed ironing out the kinks faster.

Time will tell

.
Most recently, China spent more than 30 billion USD to buy Airbus aircraft

If the same amount is used to invest in the C-919 project, the development time will be shortened.

.
Commercial Airline and that too this size of an aircraft is very critical peice of engineering, Rushing it is not beneficial. China has to make sure that all tests and operation parameters are verified before offering this plane.

Any flaw in the launch product can have devastating effects.

Also you cannot have 9 women to deliver a child in 1 month. So the money spent on the project is adequate and rightly paced.

China needs to learn from the West and integrate that knowledge and develop their own custom systems. it will take time. In the mean while you cannot neglect your domestic requirements.

So it is not only buying it is also investing so not a bad call.
