The CERN convention was signed in 1953 by the 12 founding states Belgium, Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Yugoslavia, and entered into force on 29 September 1954. The organization was subsequently joined by Austria (1959), Spain (1961-1969, re-joined 1983), Portugal (1985), Finland (1991), Poland (1991), Czechoslovak Republic (1992), Hungary (1992), Bulgaria (1999) and Israel (2014). The Czech Republic and Slovak Republic re-joined CERN after their mutual independence in 1993. Yugoslavia left CERN in 1961. Today CERN has 21 member states, and Romania is a candidate to become a member state.

Observer states and organizations currently involved in CERN programmes include the European Commission, India, Japan, the Russian Federation, Turkey, UNESCO and the USA.

Non-member states with co-operation agreements with CERN include Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Georgia, Iceland, Iran, Jordan, Korea, Lithuania, Malta, Mexico, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Pakistan, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, South Africa, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

ISLAMABAD: European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) Director Scientific Research Sergio Bertolucci said on Thursday that Pakistan fits the criteria to become an associate member of the organisation in a press conference in Islamabad, Radio Pakistan reported

Bertolucci lauded Pakistani engineers and scientists and said that “Pakistan has a first class pool of scientists and engineers, a requirement to become an associate member of CERN.”

He added that Pakistan and CERN are working in close collaboration from quite some time and the work from Pakistan’s industries is favourable.

Also present at the occasion Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Dr Ansar Parvez said that the membership will open opportunities for the locals to learn from the developed world.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on February 11, had told a four member CERN delegation that Pakistan is hoping for associate membership of the European organisation.
