Centre scraps $20 billion MMRCA deal for 126 Rafale jets for IAF, LCA Tejas to replace MiG-21

I agree with cancelling the deal. If you look back the MMRCA deal came from MCA deal which was suppose to be for mirages. However since the assembly line for mirages shut down, Defence minister anthony created a new tender for MMRCA which doesnt make any sense! this is another curropt purchase. THe rafale has nothing to offer that a block 60 f-16 cant. A block 2 Tejas comes close and the MKI can fill long range. THE IAF only requires 2 types of aicraft, have wondered why they want a medium weight aircraft.

That would be dumbest idea. Since f35 is too expensive and will take much time to delivery. F18 and f16 production lines almost at end. Also they have reached their epitome.

Best option would have been a friendly germany supplying BAE typhoon. Rafael was always too expensive for a developing country even cash rich countries not buying it.

Now most fan boys will shout about 36 jets but I doubt real impact against a big fleet of cheaper j10. India won't get much of tot on which most kids were harping since 2005.

The best that can be extracted out is a Jv in engine technology. Also materials.

Just a wild thought, but could it be that government would keep buying Rafales in batches of 2-3 squadrons till say FGFA comes into picture with LCA Mk 2. this way they will not have committed to any specific number, controlled capital budget spending, created a buffer against delay of both FGFA and LCA Mk 2 and not the least kept an option in hand for F3R. All this by scrapping the deal and thereby avoiding a new process which wouldn't yield any better result.

I fear that number is just 36, because any gigantic purchase should have tot otherwise cag will screw all the people involved in this deal.
What CAG have to do with this there Role is To Audit Not to dictate Terms to Executive.Since its A Deal btw two Governments Directly Cag Less Role

PS: Do you know what is Function of CAG

Maybe we will have one more type of aircraft

I believe SOON USA will offer F 18 to India
Russia will offer SU 35
Eurofighter will also jump in

Best solution is mki sd version of su34

But he said about ToT and make in India for future orders. Its just that route has been changed and number is not specified.

Somewhere in Berlin, Chancellor Merkel, will be rubbing her hands in glee after hearing this news of MMRCA cancellation.
The guys at EF will try their level best to prepare the best G to G deal which the GOI finds it very difficult to refuse.

Interesting times ahead. Get the Popcorn. The Rafale Vs EF game is still on.

Mega MMRCA project for 126 jets to be scrapped - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Modi government has sounded the death knell for the deadlocked $20 billion MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) project to acquire 126 fighters, which was dubbed the "mother of all defence deals" around the globe after competition for it was launched by the previous UPA regime in 2007.

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday also made it clear that if India goes in for additional French Rafale fighters, after the outright purchase of 36 jets decided during the Modi-Hollande summit in Paris last Friday, it will also be through government-to-government deals.

The stalled final negotiations for the MMRCA project, in which Rafale emerged the winner in January 2012 after a hotly-contested open global competition, had envisaged the induction of 126 fighters - the first 18 through direct acquisition from France, with the rest to be made by Hindustan Aeronautics in India after transfer of technology.

Even though Parrikar did not utter the words "scrap" or "cancel" in connection with the MMRCA project, he used enough analogies to stress exactly that. "A car cannot travel on two roads at the same time. The other road (MMRCA) had a lot of problems," Parrikar said.

But the minister did not specify how many additional Rafales would be acquired after the first 36 Rafales are inducted directly from France, which itself is likely to take well over two years. But the number now will certainly not be as much as 126 fighters, with Parrikar holding it would "financially be a very steep slope to climb".

But he added that "all options are being kept open", including the 'Make in India' component for additional Rafales if required. Holding that "nitty-gritties" are not worked out at the PM-level, he said India and France would now hold discussions on the future course of action. "The fine print of what has been agreed (in the Modi-Hollande summit) is not with me yet," he said.

Concurrently, the Modi government is also trying to improve the serviceability of the 272 Sukhoi-30MKIs contracted from Russia for over $12 billion. It is just 55% for the 200 Sukhois inducted till now. The DRDO-HAL combine is also being pushed for faster induction of 120 indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft. "The gap can be filled," said Parrikar.

main concern is air to ground mode, neither LCA nor mki can substitute rafale in this area.that's the only pblm.otherwise cancellation is OK.

Here is my take :

1>India will again going to order 36+8(Reserve)=44+ 36(earlier)=80 Rafales at the cost of 10-11 Billion dollar just like Mirage-2k but with Lifetime service maintainability agreement to ensure smooth procurement of spares ,also it will sign other agreement so that many of spares going to manufactured in India.

2>India will invest on LCA Mk1-Mk2 production line to increase the production.

3>Just Like MMRCA even FGFA will be cancelled in the favour of AMCA with France will be called as lead consultant.

As delicious as it may sound, don't think EFT will now come into picture. BTW would be quite a fantasy to have 6 squadrons each of EFT and Rafale in IAF colors.
