Just looks awesome!!!!!

. . .
why waste time on akash mk2 why not use time and money to convert aad and pad into SAMs:hitwall::hitwall::frown:

That is eventually going to happen, There were plans that Astra will be a SAM as well...

25 yrs in the making, Army inducts Akash - The Times of India

Indian armed forces are going in for a huge induction of the indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems to counter the threat posed by enemy fighters, drones and helicopters on both western and eastern fronts as well as protect "vital areas and installations".

Developed by DRDO after 25 years of technical glitches, the 25-km range Akash air defence weapon system finally seems to have found favour with the armed forces, who are desperate to plug existing operational gaps in air defence.

The IAF had earlier ordered eight Akash squadrons — six of them will be based in North East to counter China — for Rs 6,200 crore. Now, the Cabinet Committee on Security on Thursday cleared two Akash regiments, with six firing batteries and hundreds of missiles each, for the Army. The total order for the Army stands at Rs 14,180 crore at present.

The low-reaction-time Akash is designed to neutralise multiple aerial targets attacking from several directions simultaneously, with a digitally-coded command guidance system, in all weather conditions. "The fully-automated Akash has an 88% kill probability within a specified kill zone... It has even intercepted a target with a 0.02 sq metre of radar cross-section (a fighter has a 2 sqm RCS)," said an official.

DRDO, in fact, says the sleek 5.6-metre-long Akash, powered to carry a payload of 60 kg, can even take on sub-sonic cruise missiles. Akash, which DRDO claims is "96% indigenous", is not the only SAM system that the forces are going to induct to replace their obsolete Russian-origin Pechora, OSA-AK and Igla missiles.

Here's a quote from wiki
On 27 March the vertical launch of the missile was carried out suggesting the use of the missile as a long range surface to air missile for the Indian Navy to arm its destroyers and frigates and for the Indian Air Force.

.
NO I'm not joking. we need long range SAMs having ranges of 150 to 200km:tup:)like china have (perhaps hq-9 or hq-19 with125km range but that are copies of s-300)these are installed on their newest destroyers also
can you provide link for aad and pad were SAMs (except Wikipedia)

1: You are clearly unfamiliar with the working of the Akash system. The radars are extremely long range. And one squadron consists of a number of batteries which consist of many launchers which are spread out in a large area. So you don't need the missile to have a 300 km range. One whole squadron can defend a very large area. Each battery has it's own radar. Plus there is a squadron level radar and fire control system.
2: SAM is a surface to air missile. Interceptors work on the same principle as normal SAM's with a much higher flight ceiling, range and precision level. The PAD doesn't know the difference between a missile and a plane. It IS a sam. It's not gonna say 'no i will not hit that target, it has wings!'

Read my lines carefully dude ! What i said is, If a low cost missile can SMASH the aircraft, why the hell you need this "more damage" ?
I think you didn't like my joke.
Well a SAM is not just meant for fighter jets.

And when they say based on AAD, they mean its guidance system and avionics etc. not the whole missile.
Not enough info is there on Ashvin, but whatever is there, its saying that it will be comprising of AAD missiles. They won't be developing a whole new missile based on AAD's guidance system and avionics. But if you have any such information please do share with us afterall we are here for this only.

.
SAM and ABM are two different systems. Usually ABM is more costly as well as designed to destroy highly maneuverable low speed targets like fighters. AAD can be a good SAM but not PAD/PDV.

.
The kinetic energy required to smash an IRBM is exponential times the energy required to bring down fighter jets. So akash will logically be less powerful than the PAD/AADs.
The bottom line is why waste 100m $$ missile to bring down a fighter which costs 70m $$. ?

is a single missile costs $100 million ? i don't think so

. .
No missile costs $100 million. I remember read some where (most probably Dr. Saraswat's interview) that single AAD costs $ 2 million and they are establishing production capacity of 100 missiles per year.

100 a year figure cannot be right. I doubt we have even half that production rate for prithvis. What are the chances we have double the rate for PAD?
