Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (Composite Materials)

WSalam
That is my main intention. However I need an introduction with Army. That is also a challenge for me. If I want to present I need some solid contacts and I am pretty sure I wont be able to get it from the friends of friends but I already am talking to them as well. My father has a very good workshop in Gujranwala with CNC machinary, if I am able to secure any composite tender I will start my own setup there with my father. But again from everyone I hear the same thing, its not easy to get in.
I wouldn't focus solely on getting a military contract right off the bat. From a long term business standpoint, diversifying your product portfolio and client base (across different industries) is important.

Even if you were to get a contract as a defense supplier, projects could be cancelled or postponed (Pakistan is still dealing with a revenue shortfall which is impacting the military as well) and if all your investment is focused on one client, you're at their mercy.

As someone else mentioned, look at supplying the automotive industry etc as well. Having worked in the CFRP industry, you're probably already familiar with where else the material is utilized and can identify industries in Pakistan (or outside Pakistan) to contact.

Its not necessary that you go only for military projects. Military has limited scope. If you find a commercial application you can cater unlimited market of local as well as exports

As I posted in my introduction, I am originally from Gujranwala. I studied in Pakistan until my A-Levels and went to UK for my Bachelors and Masters in Aerospace Engineering. Where I specialized in Composite Material (CFRP) in Aircraft Structures. I worked in Dubai for 6 years. Now looking forward to work in Pakistan industry in same field. I dont have enough knowledge of Pakistan's aviation industry at the moment.
Unfortunately, from what i have heard, there isn't much scope in Pakistan for these advance materials as far as I am aware. Can anyone guide me where I can start? I have done lots of projects in Carbon fiber light-weight materials regarding structures starting from design (including calculations), fabrication, installation and management. Any information in this field in Pakistan will really help me a lot. Some of my friends of friends are working with Army as a vendor and fabricating required parts however all of them are working in steel. I am interested in knowing is there even any chance for specialist like me in Pakistan industry which can help the industry?

Kind Regards,

Get all necessary related information, but start your own firm and provide services. Few to consider to start with following:
  • Fibre Glass roofs for porches/Bus stops
  • Fibre Glass roofs for poultry/cattle sheds
  • Motorcycle parts with fibre glass/carbon fibre
  • Rickshaw bodies
  • Car's aerodynamic kits
  • Fibreglass/Carbon Fibre body's for boats/recreational boats
  • Hobbyist aircraft models
  • Drones bodies
  • Gliders bodies
  • Aircraft parts
Just do some brain storming at your, then you could offer your services to PAF, Army, Navy, Airlines etc.

Now that is a shame...I would’ve thought a person with your skills and experience would not have a problem finding employment in Pakistan. Maybe you should look at setting your own company up.

If you intend to work in the public sector then the others have already informed you about the route to take.

However, if you want to set up own shop and work as a vendor to the military then frankly speaking don't (at least not now).

Military does not have a VC like culture where they will invest in your idea. Apart from sifarish (not required always but you know the culture) and possible palm greasing (again not required always, sifarish/nepotism matters more) you also need to follow PPRA type rules.

It is not that easy. They will usually bind you into a contract that will usually exclude price escalation clauses (meaning you will have to bear any loss due to change in exchange rate e.t.c for imported items). They will also need bank guarantees for bid and performance (10% at least). That will not be easy because you will have to source the same from banks which would need collateral (cash/property e.t.c)

If something goes sideways then they will just encash the guarantees and move on and you will then have to file a law suit which will take years to settle (if at all). If payments from them are delayed due to budgetary shortfalls then you can't do anything (sure file a lawsuit but then say goodbye to future contracts).

As an example. Go through these tender documents on below sites. Read the check list e.t.c. Are you able to meet those requirements.

https://www.pac.org.pk/tenders

https://pof.gov.pk/tenders

http://www.wahindustries.com.pk/tenders.php

What you should rather do is first start with civilian sector first. Then move on to dual use items and once you have enough ability to bear risks/losses then you can branch out to pure military items.

First of all thank you very much for all the advise and I will surely follow it, I will try to contact any organisation or person I can to follow up regarding this field.
As far as other industry suggested like automotive, ricshaw etc, I have been working in Dubai (in composite field) for 6 years and the main challenge of this field is the cost. Our company where I worked was rejected many times based on our quotation's price by contractors just because we were too expensive and they prefer the ugly look in steel because its cheaper. All the prepregs, PU foam, resins etc are mostly imported from Euorpe. I highly doubt that small companies in Pakistan would willing to use composite materials in their product especially carbon fiber (which is much lighter and stronger) compared to Glass fiber or even hybrid material. Then there is problem of which method to use i.e. pre-pregs or infusion. Both of them are having their own pros and cons. but again I was aiming for pak army because from what i have heard is that only they are capable of spending money on good stuff in Pakistan. I am from Gujranwala and my father started a company in steel fabrication making harvester parts. At the beginning, he was just focusing on quality whether it'd be costing him more. He made some of the best quality parts in whole Pakistan. Later just to find out that no was interested, everyone here prefers low quality as long as they are getting a lower price. And trust me when I say this, most people dont know that it will cost them less to use high quality product in long run. Anyways my point is that I am reluctant to leave my job and start a setup there just to find later that there is no scope for this field in Pakistan. I am doing my research and will try my best to read articles and approach as many people as I can. Again thank you guys for giving me insight to this industry. This forum is really good, many people with knowledge and skills in one place.

Kind Regards,
