My name is Alan Bush (UK). I’m trying to find information concerning my biological father who was a Captain Mohammed Aslam who was stationed with the CSDIC(India) ‘Z’ Section, at Cranwich Camp, Thetford, Norfolk, England, in November 1944. I have the link to the Pakistan Defence website from a retired NZ Army Major with whom I was having a totally unrelated discussion when I mentioned the circumstances of my birth in June 1945. My mother was born in 1924 therefore Aslam would have probably been born this year or maybe a couple of years earlier(?).

If there is any information that anybody can give me, it would be much appreciated.
Best wishes
Alan Bush

Thank you all for your help and guidance so far. I don’t have any further information other than a Captain (acting) Mohammed Aslam was awarded the Military Cross in 1945 for actions against German forces in Italy in summer 1944. Could be the same guy? But can’t be certain.

I will send you contact details of a guy who has vast knowledge on the undivided British Indian Army by PM. He might be able to help. From your dad's name he obviously is a Muslim and overwhelming majority of the Muslims in the BIA came from provinces that federated into Pakistan in 1947.

CSDIC records being 'z' are sealed by the national archive. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C803908 , your father could not have been stationed at CSDIC because CSDIC was staffed by English officers and other ranks to identify any Indian British soldiers who were at risk of defecting to the then INA (which was seen as an enemy of the Empire).

Did your father hold a full commission or an IEC (Indian Emergency Commission), do you have his service number or what was his parent unit? Because CSDIC is not a corps or unit that natives would have been allowed into, so you will need to find out if he was attached to the adjutant corps etc?

If you have his IEC or service number you can find his open records (if available as many were destroyed over the years due to fires etc). The office you need to enquire at is called the 'Old INDIA Office' at the War Office in Kew, United Kingdom.

If you have his service medals or any decorations such as oak leaf etc, you can also try and searching his name in the mention in dispatches gazette from 1939 to 1945. Here are the contact details for 'open' access records from the Indian War Office.

Thanks for all this! I have a letter from Aslam to my mother and he signs it as Captain Mohd Aslam, CSDIC(I), ‘Z’ Section, Cranwich Camp, Thetford, Norfolk (England). From research that I’ve done, the Camp housed Indian soldiers caught fighting for the Axis powers and they were interrogated at this camp. Aslam Army No. was IEC 5537, 3/1st Punjab Regiment, and was W.S. Lieutenant (Acting Captain), Vill Numbrowal, P.O. Phagwari, Distt Rawalpindi. But this information is taken from a citation for his Military Cross awarded in April 1945 for actions in Italy against the Germans in 1944. However, I can’t be certain this Aslam is the same Aslam at Cranwich Camp!

If it was Cranwich then you will not be able to retrieve the records for another 100 years! Sorry! Best bet is to email or write to the Old India Office, at the War Office in Kew, London.
