As a philosophical conservative, I believe in the obligation of the state to ensure the common good by providing a minimum safety net in which people in need will not be allowed to fall below, and no one should go without food, shelter, and healthcare, most especially children. That is of course, going to differ from country to country depending on how economically developed they are, cost of living there, etc. I even think it is a global principle in which rich countries have an obligation to help the truly poor countries in immediate relief and development, but no matter where it happens, it needs to be based strictly on need, on helping those individuals and families become self-sufficient, and not on some open ended dole. I'm glad my country has strict means-testing of such help and does not allow it to be open ended. You need help, fine. Job training, sure, but then those people must find work if they are able and take care of their own families and contribute to society. I also believe that the most tried and true way of creating those needed jobs for the poor, is through the free market, and encouraging entrepreneurship.

Another concern is Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), which would be another victim. Right now, a lot of recipients receive quite a bit of compensation, which there is no way that any basic income could ever cover completely. Unless they make this basic income a supplement to certain welfare programs such as ODSP and Canada's universal health care program, I do not see such a program being popular, but if they do make it a supplement, it would no longer become affordable.

I am not sure it would take a hit but U are absolutely right, a motorized wheel chair for a disabled person costs almost 30kCAD which 75% is paid by ODSP. I would never be able to afford it.
