Canada to withdraw from Kyoto Protocol

Environment Minister Peter Kent: ''Kyoto is not the path forward for a global solution for climate change''

Canada will formally withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, the minister of the environment has said.

Peter Kent said the protocol "does not represent a way forward for Canada" and would have forced it to take "radical and irresponsible choices".

The move, which is legal and was expected, makes it the first nation to pull out of the global treaty.

The protocol, initially adopted in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997, is aimed at fighting global warming.

"Kyoto, for Canada, is in the past, and as such we are invoking our legal right to withdraw from Kyoto," Mr Kent said in Toronto.

He said he would be formally advising the United Nations of his country's intention to withdraw.

He said the cost of meeting Canada's obligations under Kyoto would cost $13.6bn (10.3bn euros; £8.7bn): "That's $1,600 from every Canadian family - that's the Kyoto cost to Canadians, that was the legacy of an incompetent liberal government".

Canada declared four years ago that it did not intend to meet its existing Kyoto Protocol commitments and its annual emissions have risen by about once third since 1990.

I'm not really a big supporter of the whole kyoto plan, the main reason is that its unfair toward the developing countries. Sure there is global warming, but all this started long ago when these industrialized nations where developing. Everyone is going to look for the betterment of their own country. Non of the developing country should go with any of the talks unless the developed nation agree in sharing technology into helping with the development.

As conservatives are gaining power in each western country, they are leading their countries and the world into certain doom. Even the not so radical strains of these people believe in creationism and reject evolution, believe that human intervention has nothing to do with global warming and believe in a million other ridiculous things. This is just another instance of steps in that direction. They look at the bill of 13bil but don't care that there might be countries that will be wiped out entirely from the map, may be even some low lying parts of Canada. May be more Canadians can tell us what they feel here.

Our convesrative government is doing okay here. But for the next 2 years, I think I'm going to re-elect the liberal. I'm getting bored of the Convservative.

True but the economy is hurting because of the EPA regulations. Companies have to follow strict regulation and pay huge fines, why would any company open business if they have to follow and pay such cumbersome laws, when they can move over seas and avoid all these plus get job done cheaper.

Interesting that you've mentioned about the rise of right wing political parties. IMO, it's due to the aging population in the Western World. The saying "If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain" best illustrates this. It doesn't matter if you agree with that statement or not as generally older voters tend to vote for right wing parties. Unfortunately in Canada, the senior population have surpassed the young population so the next election will see the neo-cons back in office.

 second largest now, worlds largest economy by 2027, space program, super computers, mega cities when does the fiction end that China is a developing economy?

Actually... being a "developed" country is a function of per capita indicators, such as GDP per capita and HDI.

According to the World Bank, in order to be classified as a developed country, you need an income per capita of over $10,000.

So even if we do become the #1 largest economy in the world, there is a good chance that we will remain as a developing economy.

Expect the rules that determine whether one country is developed or not to be 'revised' to suit an agenda.
