Social cohesion and the need to fit in forced the poor kid to cut his hand off. He singled himself out by accidentally raising his hand and felt obliged to cut his hand off in order to take himself out of the public's crosshairs.

its possible that the kid genuinely believes that his hand was blasphemous(as he told to the bbc reporter). only an investigation will tell us whether there was an incitement to violence. I doubt all villagers will attack one of their own because most people in villages know each other.

I read the BBC report on him.
Its not easy to cut your own hand all by yourself.

I guess the 2 no. mullah and his stooges took the boy and cut off his hand forcefully when boy committed the mistake.
If that mullah didnt stop the boy cutting off his hand then i dont see how such a psychopath mullah would have let the boy go outside the mosque.

This is exactly the same transition each religion and its followers starting from Adam went through. God sends down a message and we humans start acting like we own it. Religion is from God and he knows it better, its only a tool/code of life for humans.
In the end the religion becomes a cult and people don't see God in it so they get frustrated and they leave religion. Then God sends down his wrath and punish people. Then he sends another reminder with a more suited teaching for that time. But at that time, only the one's who have some purity in their hearts listen to that reminder and the rest just wander in ignorance forever. That is their punishment and they continue to wander. This is the same cycle Jews, Hindus, Christians, currently Muslims go through.
