What's new

Cabinet to take up Mirage upgrade deal this week

i am neither russain nor usa fan i just know we need numbers and quality to counter our sweet china , pakistan friend

su35 is one of the best plane in today and well tell me how will your old friend react when you move for new one

we have to keep balance in between them old friend and new one

if Russians are willing to be a good after sales partner with a SU-35 deal then IAF should go for it or... IAF should hire another aviation company to be in charge of maintenance for the SU-35 like IAI or Dassault etc Russia is no doubt number 1 friend but they really neat to stop being pricky on spares issues

Seriously it's Epic Fail to upgrade those.

Better Buy new .

My vote F-18

its not a question of whether russia is willing to supply spares, but whether they are able to...... Its their industry which needs to improve, not their willingness to supply india with spares........
Or best case scenario- the russians allow us to produce our own spares after technology transfer, otherwise normally even with fighters like su 30(which we build in india and will be completely indigenous soon) we have to source spares from russia (contractual obligation)

my vote-
1. Mig 29/35 but only if spares problem is solved.
2. Tejas mk2 but only if it is as good as hal promises and is ready by 2015-16.
3. Do the upgrade, but laugh sadistically when you tell dassault that the rafale has been rejected.

I hope they scrap this deal and buy brand new off-the shelf from any vendor who were in MMRCA...
how about if we scrap this deal and go for lca tejas mk2.....because getting another aircraft except the mmrca winner means adding another platform in our never ending list of aircraft....

Cabinet panel to discuss $2.4b Mirage-upgrade deal with France

NEW DELHI The $2.4-billion deal with France for upgrade of India’s Mirage-2000 combat planes is all set to come up for discussion at the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) next week with the defence ministry preparing a note in this regard.

“The Mirage-2000 upgrade deal is coming up in the CCS meeting next week. The CCS note for the upgrade programme has been prepared and sent,” a senior defence ministry official said on Saturday.

The move comes even as India’s defence ministry and air force top brass seem to be split over the high costs and likely benefits to the country’s future air power needs.

Among points of contention is the deal cost to upgrade the 52 Mirage-2000 combat aircraft by French company Dassault Aviation.

Taking into account $1 billion for new weapons and another $500 million for new facilities at Bangalore-based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the upgrade, the cost could rise to $3.9 billion, the officials said. The cost of the upgrade may work out to $7.9 million per aircraft, which, the opponents of the deal contend, is the same as that of a new fighter jet that India is buying under the $10.4 billion medium multi-role combat aircraft tender.

Those supporting the deal argue that once upgraded, these aircraft will be as potent as a new combat plane.

Among the upgrades planned for Mirage-2000 under the contract include night vision goggle compatible glass cockpit, advanced navigational systems, advanced Identify Friend or Foe (IFF) system, advanced multi-mode multi-layered radar, fully integrated electronic warfare suite and advanced beyond visual range (BVR) capability. The new weapons include 450 MICA interception and aerial combat missiles.

French firms Thales and MBDA will be the weapons systems integrator and missiles supplier respectively.

Two of the planes will be upgraded in France, another two in India with French help, and the rest 48 entirely by the HAL. India bought 52 Mirage-2000s in 1982 and fully inducted these into the IAF in 1986.

Why upgrade... It still has more life in it.. Buy 4 squadrons of 4.5 gen with AESA instead for that money. By the time M2K retires , our pilots will have a good experience with the new fighter.

Maybe 3 squadrons of super hornets with 10 Growlers..:D or even Gripens..

I fighter logistics replaced by another.
Why not all growlers ?
1 Growler with 2/3/4 mki's ?
Deep attack combo.
MKI rcs disadvantage will be + by good jammers of Growler.
Not to mention AESA and mki can switch off its radar.

2 squadrons of Growler.. 36+2. ...???

Would it fit the bill?

Will US sell it to us?

Better we go for F16IN

Cabinet should scrap this deal and instead increase the no of MRCA by 50 so that will solve the problem in easy way ... and Mirages can be used in less hostile situations once MRCA arrives

That will be further delay. Just accept the 40 Rafale's France promised to deliver to address the squadron strength issue.b

Or

buy 3 squadrons of gripens or 2 squadrons of hornets and Growlers.

Anyway in all probability it will be the upgrade going on.

Scrap this deal and buy rafales.

Update the fighter with new weapon systems/radars (2032+Py5+Derby) with low cost. No air frame changes, so French greedy ppl need not to be consulted.

they have some serious money to waste... and why the frenchies charging that much ??

well, a cheaper and a more fast process would be buying used mirage 2009
from uae ( they are replacing them for f-18 or rafale) and then upgrade your existing fleet of 52 mirages to 2009 standard with israel's offered quotation.

in that way, in less time, you would have 100 odd mrca equivalent fighters

mmm isn't it ironic that on one side u are saying tht we should not involve french greedy people in miraage upgrade deal and another side u want to buy rafale from those french greedy people....
