DHAKA, June 14, 2021 (BSS)-The Cabinet today approved draft of Automobile Industry Development Policy-2021 aiming to develop local automobile industry.

The approval came from the weekly Cabinet meeting held at the Cabinet Room of the Jatiya Sangsad with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

“We need to develop the automobile industry for our own interest amid the growing demand…We’re thinking for the development of the automobile industry to some extent,” said Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam while briefing reporters at the Secretariat about the outcome of the meeting.

Actually, the government doesn’t want to allow the country to keep its dependency on import, he said.

Anwarul said there is a potential for the development of the automobile industry in the country.

The main objective of the policy is to develop the local industry by ensuring competency in automobile engineering and necessary facilities for production of automobiles and parts, he said.

The Cabinet Secretary said another objective of the policy is to enhance scopes for cooperation and joint-investment between local automobile industries with international automobile brands so that the products of famous brands and models can be produced here at cheaper costs.

He said the Japanese Ambassador in Dhaka has already offered that a famous Japanese company wants to produce their products in Bangladesh.

The policy has been designed in both Bengali and English versions.

Besides, the Cabinet gave the final approval to the draft of the Delimitation of Constituencies Bill, 2021 in a bid to formulate an act, repealing an ordinance promulgated during the military regime in line with the court’s judgment.

“The proposed law has been designed aiming to make an act instead of the existing Delimitation of Constituencies Ordinance 1976,” said the Cabinet Secretary.

No major change was brought to the draft law, he added.

The Cabinet also cleared a proposal for accepting the membership of OIC’s Women Development Organisation (WDO) as well as ratification and signing of the WDO Statute to this end.

The meeting was informed about this year’s February 05-10 visit of the Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud in India.

FINALLY DAMM took long enough , but it's going to be very difficult to make automobiles when the nation doesn't even have proper education facilities nor didn't even industrialize

Industrialization does not happen at the drop of a hat.

it takes careful planning and exploiting the global economic condition to your favor.

BD has had 50 years to Industrialize.

China started in 1980's and now here we are.

This move has come at least 20 years too late. When the world is focusing on AI( where the real cash is in the future) . BD is focusing on automobile.

Imagine where the Saudi's would be if they tried to sell renewable energy in the 1950's instead of digging for oil..

@Bilal9 bhai is 100% correct about military rule in Bangladesh. However I want to add something and that is , pseudo educated people in Bangladesh are more dangerous that illiterate class in Bangladesh.

But the main problem is west. As long as we are dependant to west for export our garments , we have no future , as if we impose direct military rule, they will sanction us.

So we have to focus on industrialization. When we will be less dependant on garments, so our west dependency will almost be gone.

And by this time China will be more economically powerfull , so surely we can again introduce direct military rule.

Then west may su.ck goat dick; as if we will be less dependant on garments, we can show them middle finger, ad sanction won't be a problem.

Unfortunately without strong military back up you can't even be industrially developed.

There will be a minimum problem because the Japanese company will assemble the components in BD. It will import all the components and assemble them here. This is the normal procedure.

I think the Japanese Ambassador was talking of Mitsubishi Motors. It is making motor vehicles since 1917 during a time when WWl was going on.

1) pointing fingers at the west is useless really. With the rise of the Yuan western sanctions will have little meaning.

2) Regarding military backing the Awami league. I disagree here. Military is not backing the Awami league. Rather its a mutually beneficial relationship. Since its formation, the Bangladesh military has always been against the Awami league.

3) Regarding military rule being the best. I disagree here. for several reasons. If military stays long enough in direct power they also become like corrupt government officials. but even more dangerous as they have guns Pakistan comes to mind here . Also specifically in the case of BD. If somehow the military topples the Awami league. The military will not stay long in power. They will simply hand over power to religious fundamentalists and then back the fundamentalists from the shadows. A very much scary and unwanted scenario.

4) solution is that there needs to be forward planners. I have feeling the BD officials don't plan for the long term. by long term I dont mean 5 years. I mean atleast 10 years ahead . untill BD gets government officials who plan ahead , then you will always have this problem regardless of who is in power. So BD officials should really plan ahead with atleast 10 years in the mind.

Dont equate Pakistan and Egypt with BD .Pakistan is a nuclear armed country and Egypt has the most powerfull military in africa. Different ball game compared to BD.

While when it comes to running the country, BD military has always had a stake and will continue to do so. But I highly doubt they are the sole backer while keeping the political parties as a front. If you say that no one can stay in power comfortably without their co-op then i agree. But I highly doubt BD military enjoys that much clout like pak or egyptian military .

The current relationship between Awami league and BD military is mutual benefit. Nothing more. BD military cannot topple any government without the backing of a foreign power. Something Pak army or Egytian army has a history of doing. So no. Army is not in charge. Its a mutual beneficial relationship. But traditionally the Awami league has enjoyed less favor from the Army. compared to the other parties in BD.

I have a suspicion that Islamists are the favorite child of the army. But Army cant back them for the fear of international condemnation. If BD military ever get backing from any foreign power to topple the Awami league, then very good chance that BD military will replace Awami league with Islamist government.
