Cabinet nod for defence university​

NEW DELHI: The Indian National Defence University (INDU), which will work towards infusing 'strategic culture' in governance, will be set up at an initial cost of Rs 395 crore near New Delhi.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, on Thursday accorded "in principle" approval to establish the main INDU campus, which will come up on 200 acres at Binola in Gurgaon district of Haryana. As reported by TOI earlier, INDU will bring together existing institutes like the National Defence College (Delhi), College of Defence Management (Secunderabad), Defence Services Staff College (Wellington) and National Defence Academy (Khadakwasla), which are currently affiliated to different universities, under its umbrella.

As a fully-autonomous institution to be created by an Act of Parliament, INDU will undertake long-term defence and strategic studies, create "synergy" between academicians and government.

Indian cabinet approves setting up of INDU​

NEW DELHI: The Indian cabinet on Thursday approved the setting up of the Indian National Defence University (INDU) as a fully autonomous institution to be constituted under an ‘Act of Parliament’ at an estimated cost of Rs 2.95 billion. The university will be built on 200 acres of land at Binola in Gurgaon district near Delhi.

The cabinet note said the INDU would undertake long-term defence and strategic studies and create synergy between the academic community and government functionaries. “It would promote policy-oriented research on all aspects relating to national security as an input to strategic policy making. It will also encourage awareness of security issues by reaching out to scholars and an audience beyond the official machinery. The University would also educate national security leaders on aspects of security strategy, military strategy, information strategy and technology strategy through teaching and research,” the cabinet note added.
