Cabinet approves construction of 69 bridges in Myanmar

New Delhi : The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the construction of 69 bridges including approach roads on the Tamu-Kyigone-Kalewa (TKK) road section of the trilateral highway in Myanmar at a cost of Rs. 371.58 crore.

This will impart all weather usability to the TKK road section, which is also part of the route for the proposed Imphal-Mandalay bus service. It will improve connectivity between India and Myanmar and facilitate the movement of goods and traffic.

During the visit of then prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to Myanmar in May 2012, it was agreed, at the request of Government of Myanmar, to undertake construction of 71 bridges in the Tamu – Kyigone – Kalewa (TKK) road section of the Trilateral Highway.

The Government of Myanmar has started work on constructing two bridges, on its own, as these bridges needed urgent attention.

As a result, construction of the remaining 69 bridges will be undertaken under Government of India’s assistance.

Young mountains which are landslide-prone, similar to the terrain in the North-Eastern states, hence more preventive measures such as retaining walls need to be built. Thus, cost increases.

Slightly off topic: Silchar-Imphal-Moreh, Dimapur-Imphal-Moreh & Aizawl-Imphal-Moreh highways need to be upgraded to take advantage of the IMT Trilateral Highway.

Its going to be a difficult terrain but constructing roads is the way forward. This is the only way of accessing trade via land routes and connecting the whole SAARC
 
A good move to further the dream of a inter-connected SAARC but this will only be a success if India's NE states are extensively developed also.

The NE will be automatically developed once there are trade and job creating options inside the state so that people wont move to other states for job and would internally make a change in progress of the state

PM modi is smartly trying to improve relations with all small and big countries by investing and construction of projects . This strategy is also paying off like the Afghans are quite impressed by the new Parliament they got or the Iranian port in which India is investing . Pakistan could have tried the same but because of lack of funds its not happening . l
 
A good move to further the dream of a inter-connected SAARC but this will only be a success if India's NE states are extensively developed also.

The current Union govt is far more active in NE. As an NE resident, I have never seen this level of engagement. Every month, a minister is in NE for official purposes. Infra projects, both new and delayed, are being speeded up across NE.

Some time back, I had compiled all the ongoing and proposed highway/connectivity projects across SE Asia as a part of India' Act East Policy on an Google Map.

Quietly, India is building an extensive network accross SE Asia which can be expanded and leveraged for strategic purposes.

Good to know my friend, it is going to be a long road though as the NE as sadly been neglected for a long long time.
