Business train, Shalimar Express cost PR millions

I think the Pak govt should go on a RESET mode with Pakistan Railways..
completely dissolve the organisation..and ask mba students or expatriates to come up with a business plan to start from scratch...

The pillars of state are falling down only now, but the rot started long ago. The root causes cannot be absolved of the blame simply because the present lot in charge is so awful.

Noone is absolving them, but just putting them in a better category than the present lot.

On the first place there was no need to expect that a business passenger train will give a railway organization profit...

My dad works for Indian railways, In india if earnings were being calculated from passenger trains then IR would have been shut long before....Most of the passanger trains causes Loss to IR, IR very intelligently balances it with Freight!!...Earnings should be expected from freight trains...One day earning of IR from Ahmedabad division is 15-20 Corers...

Thats right.

Its the freight trains that subsidies the passenger trains. Its plain maths, each second class carriage has a max of 72 berths. Assuming the cost of ticket for each berth to be Rs 750 ( which is on the higher side) and also assuming all berths are taken 24x7, it means the revenue earned from each coach is Rs 54000 per day.

Subtract the fixed costs Railways has on staff, maintenance of rolling stock , tracks etc etc it does not even break even.

The good old Maal Garhis which we detest while waiting at level crossings are the work horses and revenue generators.

Today I saw the news that railways fares are going to increased.

If Diesel & electricity goes up , so will Railway fares.

Truck fares rise so will Railways .. eventually.

Still the raise will not be high as compared to the rest.

Not the diesel price but GoI is following the recommendation of the committee they formed for modernization and safety but halted by TMC.

Don't know about the profits of this all and other details, but some folks that have met were all praise for the business train service, facilities and other conditions. They traveled from Karachi to Lahore. WiFi, chargers etc etc all in the coach.

Recently experienced service , all was good except on one way there was a delay as there was another train ahead of us little BT could do to move that out of the way.
